2001 f250 4 wheel drive problems

I have a 2001 superduty and when I try to engage the 4 wd it does not work. I will manually lock the hubs and push the brake, then i will shift to neutral and turn the electric switch to 4 low. I dont think that i am suppose to manually lock the hubs but somebody told me that they work by vacum and they must be tore up, so thats why I manually lock them. Anyway, when I turn the switch I can here somthing up fronk clicking or locking but it only goes into low range, the front wheels do not pull. I will appreciat any help, also this is my first forum, can anyone tell me how i might do a search to find similar previous posts and replies.

Take a knee, stick one hand behind the wheel and see if you find a disconnected vacuum hose...
