My 2002 with 7.3l diesel died on the way to work this morning. Not much of a sputter then off. Got it restarted a couple of hours later and only made it about 1/2 mile or so. One miss then off again.
I'm thinking CPS as that is the obvious thing. Here are the trouble codes I got:
P1670: EF feedback signal (what's an EF?)
0603: ICM Kam error
0344: CMP circuit intermittant.
Does anyone have any additional information for me based on these codes? I'm not sure what the EF signal does. Not all that sure about the KAM error either.
Also could any of this give light to somewhat poor fuel efficiency? I'm seeing 13 to 15 mpg in town and maybe 16 or 17 on the highway.
Thanks in advance. Off to get a CPS and will check in later.
I believe you are on the right track with the CPS. for the KAM Error it could be from disconnecting the batteries or programming. Not sure on the EF code, but I'm sure that the guy's on here will be able to let you know pretty soon.
Sounds like CPS to me too. That's what mine would do. The longer I'd wait to get it running, the longer it'd run before dying again. I did have a PCM relay go out once though, truck died going down the road. Wouldn't crank for a while, got it cranked, home and the next morning wouldn't start. Got it towed to dealership, they cranked it, drove it and after 10-15 min it died again (thank goodness), found no power to the PCM, replaced the $12 relay and it started and has ran fine since (knock on wood).
Thanks for the input guys. I'll keep the PCM thing in the back of my mind in case there are additional problems. I changed the CPS and it does start and run now. Only drove around the block so not far enough to know for sure. Cleared the codes so we will see what shows back up, maybe nothing.
I measured the old and new sensors with an ohm meter and they are very different. With the locking tab downward, old sensor measures 5.4M between outer pins, 5.0M between left and center, and 47.6M between center and right. New sensor measures 4M between center and right and open for other pins.
I suppose now I just need to head off back down the highway and see if I make it further than I did this morning.
Click on the top bar to supersize, then right-click on it to download the larger copy.
This is a very Handy Chart to have in the truck to help you troubleshoot the electrical system.
I made the Copy so you can print it in the Landscape View, turn the page sideways and it fills-up most of the single page, and you can read everything on it with the naked eye.
it took me a couple hours to scan and Photoshop this image and well worth the time to make a copy.
Notice how the CMP goes to the ICP then the EBP before the Map Sensor.,
It controls the Fuel Injection Pressure and Timing.
Hi Russ, thanks for posting that diagram. That is very helpful for understanding how all the sensors and systems interact. I printed a copy and saved to HD for when I lose the copy I printed!
