7.3 Oil leak

This is my first post here. I found this forum while looking for information on oil leaks on my 2002 F350 7.3L Power stroke. I have been working out of town for several weeks now and last night my wife called me and told me oil was pouring out of the engine. I had her open the hood and she said the oil was come from the top of the engine and that the valley between the heads was filled with oil. She could not see where the oil was coming from. Any ideas? Could this be an oil line to the Turbo or maybe a broken Turbo? Any help would be great. Thanks

Re: 7.3 Oil leak

Definately sounds like HPOP leak, Turbo wouldnt leak THAT bad I doubt. And seldom fills the whole valley, HPOP is in front, so it does.
Sounds like a HPOP Line, or plug leaking. Not a hard fix, but hard enough if your out of town!

WELCOME TO TDS,, and not to sound chauvanistic, but KUDOS to the wife, for knowing to look up there, and how to explain it!

On edit I was posting at the same time as the above poster, NOT intending to sound like I was dissin his Diagnosis,, about turbo. Just that to me it sounded more like HPOP at first guess,, Had not even read the other reply yet then!

Re: 7.3 Oil leak

Thanks I will check that. I was kinda hoping it was the Turbo so I could justify to my wife the cost of a Bad Boy Turbo! LOL

Re: 7.3 Oil leak

Yeah had the same thing, dealer said it was a non-servicable leak on the hpop. They replaced the whole oil pump. Then 3 weeks later had oil leaking again, got it back yesterday they said that I had a line that was loose...guess we'll see! Hope you get it fixed up!

Re: 7.3 Oil leak

Welcome to the site and enjoy your new-to-you diesel. This is my first also and I love it! You might want to extend your oil change intervals to 5K miles, it's 15qts oil and an expensive filter every time, and IMHO is well within reason for the engine.

Here's my thread when my High Pres Oil Pump plug was leaking...

A few other leak posts...

Re: 7.3 Oil leak

pump coupler o-ring blown out for sure. they are the one thing that will most likely run alot of oil out the back, replaced many. theres a kit w/ 3 o-rings in it w/ also some sealer thread compound. one other place is the upper couplers on the heads. there all easily seen when leaking. if it had been diesel you would have smelled it. diesel can be black also if theres alot of grease in the upper valley. you can take it to a car wash & apply some of that eng. degreaser then let it set for about 5 minutes then use the wand on it, but stay about 2 ft from the sensors then turn the trigger off & stick it down in the valley & wash it out. stay away from the glow plug controller though, cause the thing is hot all the time on the red lead post. i use a steam cleaner on all the ones that come in, in this kind of shape. Re: 7.3 Oil leak

A very common place for oil leaks is at the plug at the back of the HPOP, or the HP lines to the heads. The fittings and plugs are sealed with an o-ring. The ring can leak quite a bit of oil when they go bad. Usually the oil runs down the valley and out through a drain hole at the top of the bellhousing flange. It might appear to be a main-seal leak (from underneath the truck), as the oil comes out from between the trans and engine.

I've done a bunch of them...It's not a hard fix, the parts are fairly cheap. If your at all mechanically inclined, you should be able to DIY.

HERE's a link to a Navistar HPOP manual, so you get an idea about what you're dealing with.

Good luck!

On Edit: Just noticed your new (6 posts), so WELCOME!

Re: 7.3 Oil leak

Thanks. I am I can fix just about everything. I just do not have allot of experience with Diesels. I build custom Rock crawler stuff on the side, Axels, transfer cases and rock slider stuff so fixing it will not be a problem. It had me a bit spooked when my wife calls and says my truck just dumped a bunch of oil on the ground!

Re: 7.3 Oil leak

Welcome to the site, you will find the site a wealth of knowleadge when it comes time to try to figure out DIY fixes on your truck.

Owning three this site has saved me tons of money!!!

Now I may know why the F350 is leaking.

Been changing oil on the F250 from 40K miles to 236K miles every 7-10K miles with conventional diesel oil. Motor sound better than the other two with way less miles. May switch to synthetic oil in the F250 and change it every 20K like the Excursion.

Re: 7.3 Oil leak

Well I replaced those 3 O-rings and it still leaks. Looks like it is coming from under the HPOP. It only leaks when the Truck is running so I think it is most likly coming from the pressure requlator. There is another o-ring for that but the HPOP has to be pulled to replace it. It there anything I need to becarfull of when I pull it? Thanks.
