My 99 7.3L has a problem that when I try and accelerate past 2500 RPM there is a loud noise near the turbo area that sounds like a high pressure rush of air. I can let off the accelerator to allow it to up shift and the noise goes away. I have looked at the rubber gaskets on the tubing leading into the turbo and do not see any pin holes or tears.
The engine runs fine, no skipping and no error codes but I have about half of the power as normal. Any ideas would be appreciated.
You should list your truck and mods in your signature. This will really help others know what your running. You could be experiencing surge if you are running a tuner. Or if you have an aftermarket or DIY intake it might be a normal sound. Do you have gauges?

Sorry about that. The truck is bone stock, I have the Hypertech programmer but have it set back to factory default now as I was afraid it was going to have to go back to the shop. It’s a 99 F-350 with 159K miles.
The engine does not smoke, and it runs normal at idle and all the way up to 2,500 rpm. The reason I mentioned having to let off to shift is only because it continues to squeal like mad if you try and let it shift up on its own. If I accelerate slowly and not under too much of a load it will shift on its own just below 2,500 and no noise.
At first I thought it was a loose belt but after listening to it for a month now I think it is high pressure air.
