im going to big H auto auction later today, my friend is a dealer, and he found a f350 dually up there for sale, theyre asking 11,000.00 and it has around 230,000.00 miles, the body is kinda rough, w/ dings/and scratches. but the leather inside is decent condition. its a manual tranny, and sounds like it runs good. there no excess smoke, and no fluids dripping, ac works good. i will more than likely get this truck for around 9000.00-10,000.00 cash.
the problem is, the 4x4 light on the gauge cluster is illuminated. i tested the 4x4 in the lot, and seemed to be in working order. i didnt want to drive too much in 4wd cause it was gripping pretty good, when trying to turn.
im wandering what should i lookd for, problem wise? should i look for a certain color fluid in the radiator, etc? the only inspection i can do is very minimal, i cannot bring tools and start ripping it down.
this is a dealer auction where all the cars around the houston and surrounding areas run through.

with that many miles it all comes down to maintenance. It can be at the end of it's like or still have another 230K left in her. Sounds by the description it has been worked well, this doesn't mean it has to been well maintained but it does mean it hasn't been babied. If you can pull the intake tube a feel the turbo wheel for play. If it has a K&N drop in filter run away, if it had a chip or tuner installed with no guages I would run away twice as fast.

ill see if i can get the intake boot off w/o them harrassing me. on another note, the truck is all stock. ill have to check for the k&n filter though...

is there a certain amount of play the impeller should not exceed? or is it not supposed to have any play whatsoever?

Too close to flooded areas from the hurricanes for me to want anything going through a Houston auction. Look carefully for crawdads and mud where it ain't supposed to be [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]

i have a flood gauruntee at the auction, so im not worried about that.
