Man... installed new seals and a u-joint on driver's side axle shaft during the day today. What a pain in the arse. The c-clips were pretty hard to remove. Otherwise the u-joint went in ok.
The bearing seal was something else. Tried beating it on with a piece of pipe and the seal started deforming. Couldn't find cast iron pipe big enough to make up a tool using the pipe flange idea. Ended up putting together some much larger stuff from 1 1/2 or 1 3/4" cast pipe from autoparts store. That worked but lemme tell you, you have to pound on that thing with a BIG hammer to get it on and real easy to put it on slightly offset. I couldn't believe the amount of pounding it took to seat it properly. The smaller axle side dust seal went on real easy in comparison.
