Probably telliing you it won't start after work today. Usually when the battery light comes on that means the alternator is not working. Once the voltage drops to a set amount the battery light will come on.
Here is the description of how the light turns off after start-up:
When the generator builds up enough voltage to energize the voltage regulator, voltage is applied to the PCM. The PCM upon receipt of the generator charging voltage, removes the ground to the instrument cluster and turns off the charging system indicator.

the one on the passenger side is closest to the starter. But my truck had the battery light on for forever and nothing ever seemed wrong but after about 50,000 or more miles i went ahead and changed it just to take the light away because i was tired of looking at it. Go to NAPA and get one of their heavy duty alts, that way you can bring your core in and knock a little off the price. always a good thing!

ditto, I have the same year, same light, and 3 days later the truck was dead, it was the alternator. I bought one at NAPA, I think around $125 with the lifetime warranty, and have changed it twice since then about every 2-3 yrs, free except for my labor which isn't much because it's a 10 minute job to change. The NAPA guy told me it's a design problem that they put out too much current without enough cooling...get the lifetime warranty and change it whenever the light comes on.

I bought one from NAPA a couple months ago. They didn't even have a "lifetime warranty" option for any of their alternators. Their regular alternator was a 1-year warranty, and their heavy duty was a two-year.
