Black something on Trans dipstick...need help

Hey guys,

02 7.3 auto trans, 4r100. I pulled the dips stick to check the fluid level, and when I got to the end there was a line of black.....oil/grease. It seems like more like old grease than oil....I will try to get a pic in the morning. The line was on the side of the fluid level indicator that rested on the dip stick tube.

Going to do a trans service too it anyway, it was due. My question(s) I guess is, what could it be from? And is there anything I should look for while I have the trans pan off when I do the service?

Little extra info if it helps, I have a leaky boost boot that has been leaving some oil in the valley.

You need to pull the pan. I would assume you have a large amount of clutch and torque converter material. I have never seen that much in a pan (where it registers on the stick). Hopefully it is something else, but pulling the pan will tell the story.
