Boost Leak

i think i might have a boost leak. i don't know anything else it could be (ofcourse you can always learn something new). my boost gauge doesn't register anything unless i put my heavy foot down. yesterday it was getting 15lbs max. today i disconnected the wastegate and now it maxes out at 18 lbs. it still shows not boost cruzing down the road at 50mph. i have checked the boost line from the MAP vacuum line to the gauge and it isn't kinked. is there a different or better place to tap into a vacuum line? Seriously i'm lost and need help to figure this out. Thanks in advance

Bob Riley at the DIESELSITE.com used to sell a lboost leak checker. It is around 60 bucks. You undo the intake to turbo hose and put in this large leak checker plug with fittings that clamps off the supply end. Then you put low pressure regulated air from an air compressor on the fittings pressurizing the turbo and intercooler system. A hose leak will be evident from the hissing sound and pretty easy to find with the engine off. Leaks are pretty common with the stock FORD silicon boots. If I am in OD cruzing unloaded at 50 MPH I get 2 PSI boost. That is pretty low RPM and not much fuel is getting burned. So if you are reading no boost then you probably do have a leak. What temp does your pyro run then? 106

Since you dont show any mods you have made, it's hard for us to help much. 15lbs of boost on a a stock truck doesnt sound bad.

......................I installed a boost limiter set at 22 to 23 psi so I wouldn't set a code and go into limp mode . I'm running mine in a 40 hp tow position and have way more power than I need , even when pulling a 15k 5'ver . 99 PSD with 6 speed . , ipf

i'm sorry, i am new to this posting thing. i tried to update my signature but i must be doing something wrong. my upgrades are all bolt on, hyper tech pwr programmer, 4" exhaust and intake breather ( not sure of brand, got it from private party). i get no boost at all on my gauge unless i punch it. i know it's building boost because when the tranny shifts i can hear the stall coming out of the intake. everyone i talk to say that cruzing around 50mph i should be reading at least a few lbs of boost.

I have a follow up question about turbos. I have the same year make and model. I am about to sell my truck, but had a friend look at the turbo lines, and he said that the turbo bearing is going out because there is moisture on the intake hose around the clamps. (near the radiator) He said that this is tell tale signs that the turbo is about to go out due to a seal bearing leak. I told him I have driven this truck in the same visual condition for 4 years, and have not noticed any new or additional moisture. My turbo whines just fine although i do not have any gages to tell what the PSi is running.

Does he have a point?

Nope. That crud is normal (well maybe not normal, but typical) on a 7.3L unless the crankcase vent has been rerouted. What's causing the oil is the crankcase vapors being routed into the intake just before the turbo. They condense and leak out the boots which are usually not sealed very well.

Do yourself and your buyer a favor and remove the boots, clean them up spotless with some brake cleaner and reinstall them with a smear of liquid laundry detergent around the inside of each boot where it seals on the tubes. The stuff dries up like glue and keeps the oil inside. I did mine that way many miles ago and have very little oil smudge from the boots.

Or you could reroute the CCV.
