It's all in how you work it out!
I get over 20MPG!

2 reasons!

1. Our state max speed is 65MPH, so none of this 75 & 80 mph highway speeds you all seem to drive at! Often times we are down to 60 or 55 mph on regulated secondary roads... We just don't drive as fast as you all do.....going a little slower saves $ and gas!

2. Our gallons being English imperial gallons are larger than your US gallons (4.54 litres versus 3.78 litres)!

We put less gallons in the same sized tank, travelling the same distance = more MPG!

Too easey - you want a +20MPG truck then ease up on the gogojuice pedal some and use the "supersize me please" English imperial gallons in your calculations - and your MPG's will blow everyone esles out the window!

I live quite happy with my 20+MPG truck!....now if I wish to measure it in Kilometers per gallon - well she's a 30+ truck!

Lies, damn lies & statistics!

Cheers!

I owned the truck because I needed to tow. I no longer need to tow and it's hard to justify the bad MPG. If I sell it I will get a Diesel Mercedes (1999 e300 TD). Even though the Bio costs more ( at the pump ) I really like the idea of it... So I must stay Diesel.

[/ QUOTE ]
What about the idea of E85 or a hybrid?
I almost got an e300d also, but after researching I got a brand new VW Passat TDI for less than a used Mercedes. Better fuel mileage, low 40s hiway, low 30s city and less quality issues. You can pay more for the name, but they have more expensive problems also.

Sigh I know. That is the smartest move by far. But I just can't go from a crew cab f250 to a passat. I am 6'3 and while the MB is not huge, it at least "fits" me better.

Re: Can't get over 13mpg!! Might Sell :(

What about going back to stock tires and rims? One thing that kills the mpg in these trucks is the contour underneath. I know there is a poster on this site that runs his truck with stock tires and rims, and iirc, he changed his rearend to a 3.55 rearend and has gotten mpg in the high 20 range. I'm not sure what it would cost, but if you figured the cost over 100k miles, you might be able to recoup your expense to change the differential. At today's fuel prices, that cost might be recouped even quicker. just thinking outloud to keep you a happy SD owner.

Re: Can't get over 13mpg!! Might Sell :(

DC,
A couple more thoughts for you. My truck gets 14.3 to 14.5 99% of the time. IF (and that's a BIG if) I drive it with an egg under my foot, never letting it get above 1700 or 1800 rpm in town I can get it up over 17 or 17.5 It's been a long time since I drove like that. I've seen 21.4 on the highway once, coming back from Little Rock in an ice storm at 40-45mph all the way. That's just getting into OD with my auto/3.73 combo.
I sold Benz's years ago. Buying a used Benz is a real crap shoot. If you go that route, make sure you buy a car that has had EVERY service done by the book and preferable at a GOOD MB dealership. It's easy to spot the ones that haven't had that kind of service record once you look at a few. Are you ready for a $1700 sevice every 15,000 miles? That's what it cost a few years back. You can't just change the oil & filters like we do in these trucks. The car won't last. You'll more than eat up ANY fuel savings the first time something major goes wrong. At 12k/yr 14mpg costs 2785.71 using bio. 30mpg costs 1300, 25mpg costs 1560.69 and 22mpg costs 1772.72 all using the same bio. I can't remember a TD getting over 25 city. Most were in the 20-22 range. But for the sake of argument, assume you're getting the 30- ONE 15k service has chewed up ALL your fuel savings- and you had to give up your truck to do it!
It's certainly your decision, but you may not gain anywhere near what you think you're going to, and may even end up spending alot more driving the Benz. The AVERAGE service bill at the Benz dealer I was at was $1400. Some were lots more, some lots less, but figure that's what it will cost you every year.
Good luck with your choice!

Hi Dylan,

Lets see, you've chipped your engine, changed to a larger tire, drive at 70mph and running fuel with less BTU's than No:2 and then you want to complain about fuel mileage?

I run stock designed by Ford and get 19.2mpg each and every tank.

You run modified designed by Dylan and get 13mpg

Do you see the problem here

Buy UNION work UNION. It pays off in the long run
Define Union:
A labor Union is nothing more than united workers with a common goal for better working conditions.

We all are in some sort of labor Union, some are just larger than others with better working conditions!

Re: Can't get over 13mpg!! Might Sell :(

I have 305’s and lifted the front a couple of inches for clearance and get 13.75 and 14.5 when I used Diesel Kleen. I hand calculate that only put in 20 gallons at a pop. I drive 25 miles each way to work, 75 to and 60 back with about 10 miles of stop and go coming back. I run 55 psi, which probably helps a little. Now I know that my speedo is off due to the difference in tire size so mileage could be more or less.
When I run B-100 I notice no real difference other then it runs quieter.

As stated above I must be one of the luckier ones, my truck continues to get 15mpg into and 18 on the highway and 10mpg pulling our 20k 53 foot eclosed car trailer. Other than the for AIS the truck is completly stock with 170,000 now.
Hope it works out for you these are great trucks

I am asking not complaining. I only get 12.5-13mpg at my best and others seem to get better. Is it wrong for me to learn how they are doing it? As far as the chip goes - I get better mileage with it than I did without.

I am going to get the speedo re-calibrated soon, we'll see if that makes a diff. By the way my on board computer is usually off my onnly about 1 mpg.

Might be a good aidea to get a diagnostic tool on it to make sure all the sensors are working and enerything is in range - also, fuel pressure can make a difference. Boost leaks can be problems, etc...

Hey, Dylan, I didn't see in your signature, but assuming you have an automajic, its possible that you're starting to see signs of the TC starting to slip a little. Not completely unusual for these trucks with the 4r100 transmission. Might be worth taking it to a reputable transmission shop to see if they detect any slippage.

jsut a thought.

Re: Can't get over 13mpg!! Might Sell :(

The tires and possibly the chip are mainly to blame for the mileage...been there done that. Fuel filters, TC's, and other widgets may all have some effect if they were in a state of partial or full failure, but otherwise it's the tires and chip plain and simple. The EBV probably isn't sticking...if it was he'd know it.

Dylan, have you tried running a tank or two without the chip to see what the effect on mileage is? Just curious. The chip may help it may hurt, it's hard to say without trying.

in the grand scheme 13MPG with 305's isn't hateful. If you had a gasser, you'd be getting like 8 or 9...:-)

I get about 14-15 with 285's on our 01. that number goes up to as high as 19 if 265's are on it.

Thanks for all the input. I just had this impression you guys all got 100 mpg and something was wrong with my truck.

It's comforting to know that 13 mpg is average for my mods.

Anyone know what a Gas truck ( Crew Cab 4x4 shortbed) gets?

1989 F250 4x4 Long box with EFI 460 = 9 mpg no matter what - Sold for a 1976 F250 4X4 that I have spent $16,000 rebuilding. Pushing 325HP at 7 mpg with my foot in it, 10 mpg taking it VERY easy.

I have heard V-10's are about 10-11 but I don't know anyone that has one.

I think I will stick with my 7.3L...
