Steering problem - parts question

Hey guys-

I just replaced the end link bushings and sway bar bushings, which took care of the clunk that was there. I also replaced all 4 shocks and the steering dampener. My problem is that the steering is still not acting right.

During normal driving, when correcting during straight travel, the steering wheel takes longer than normal to react, and when it does, it oversteers a bit. I'm assuming the problem is my steering box (it's at FOMOCO now for a diagnosis).

Just wondering what's involved with replacing it. I saw the gear assembly on powerstrokeshop.com for $275 for $325 (Type I vs Type II).

Just wondering how hard the install is for a "backyard mechanic" in case they try to nail me with labor.

EDIT 5/15 : It's not the box, it's the right front ujoint locked up. This is causing the problem w steering. It also has a worn inner tie rod and drag link. See later post. Thanks

Thanks!

Really it's pretty straight forward, just nuts & bolts. Although you will need a pitman arm puller. Be shore to clean the bolt threads and apply a little blue thread locker when going back together.

Have you tried tightening up the steering with the adjustment screw on the steering box?

Yea, I did tighten the screw. Turns out I was wrong about the steering.

It's the right front U joint (per Ford AND a local shop) that's frozen. (FOMOCO wanted $500 for 1 ujoint - local shop wants $250 - ROFL) Also have worn drag link and inner tie rod.

What's the best brand to use? I see drastic differences in pricing for the rod and link. The local shop said I can wait on the tie rod and link, but the ujoint was causing the steering problem. So they're doing the ujoint now and I'd like to price the other stuff.

Best place to buy these? Thanks!

Jerry,

Im wondering if you ever got your steering fixed. The problem you described is the exact problem I am having - constantly having to correct steering while driving straight down a highway.

I have had 3 of 4 ball joints replaced (the 4th is ok verified by 2 sources), the pitman arm joint, new tires (Revos), adjusted and readjusted the steering box and had the steering column colapse joint welded to remove any possible loss of movement from being transferred from the steering wheel to the wheels.

During the front end alignment, a specialist increased the caster to 4.5 degrees and it all helps, but doesnt eliminate the problem.

About the only thing left is the steering box and rag joint.

Ideas on cost and complexity on DIY? Time? Special tools?

Thanks,
Bruce
