CPS MPG Test: Blue vs. Grey

I've been having some cold start issues and have found alot of useful information on this forum. My truck is a 2001 F250 which is mostly stock. I fixed the cold start and surge issues with new motorcraft glow plugs, delphi UVCH, borg warner IPR and ICP. There's still a slight rough idle so I ordered a delphi CPS from napa. I was disappointed to find out that the black delphi CPS is actually a grey delphi CPS and has the same part # stamped on it as the ford grey CPS. I've heard of a blue ford CPS so I found the part# and went to the ford dealer. I told the parts guy what I wanted and he asked what it was going on. I told him an '01 F250. He said, "this is for a '94 to '97 powerstroke. the one you need is grey." I told him the blue one should work and he almost didn't sell it to me. The parts guy just said, "if this thing goes out your truck will not run." I said, "I understand." and left with a blue CPS. So, I have a new grey CPS and a new blue CPS. I've read lots of info on both and have decided to do a MPG comparison over the next month or so. I'll start this little experiment on 1/24/13. Hopefully, one CPS will produce better mileage.

So your truck did run with the blue CPS, right? The parts guy was definitely misinformed.

I changed from a grey CPS back to my original International black one (the ones that were notorious for crapping out), and got a 2 mpg boost in fuel mileage over 2 tank fillups.

Definitely interested in seeing the results of this one. I noticed about a 2.5 mpg drop when they performed the recall and installed the grey cps. Went back to a black pre recall cps and got the mileage back.

I just did the recall too... and bought a spare grey one for $25. I can tell a difference in the smoothness of the engine but I cannot quantify it. Looking forward to your results.

I read a detailed thread on here from years ago with test data. Wish I had bookmarked it.

I also read a recent thread about a month ago.. someone mentioned a better cps for our trucks.. can't find that thread either. Starting to see a pattern!

Recall was just done on mine as well, and about 3 mpg drop.

You're probably referring to Ken's write-up here: Black, Grey, & Dark Blue Cam Position Sensor Perdels Test

My Delphi CPS is black and looks nothing like the current fors cps's. I will double check, but I am pretty sure it does not have any numbers simimilar to fords.

Did you order the delphi hts101?

I like the BWD the best, then delphi or new international cps. I no longer have the black one....I was a newb/dumba** and did not know any better. I went to ford for the recall about 5 yrs ago.

That's it...

I guess we are stuck with the grey ones.

Yes, I ordered the Delphi hts101. Light grey color #1876735C91 stamped on sensor. The same # as the ford grey ones. Maybe the napa guys pulled a switch? Wrong part in box? Can you get me a part # from yours? May have to return this one and just get a grey one from ford.

That's an International PN on your Delphi CPS, which may also appear on a Ford CPS. Maybe Delphi is the OEM supplier for Ford and International.

Well that just kinda sucks. I was really hoping to test a Delphi CPS. I've seen the Delphi HTS101 listed on amazon and its exactly what napa shows too. Hopefully everyone who orders a Delphi from amazon gets the actual black CPS pictured and not a grey CPS.

I got mine from amazon. I will see if I can find any numbers stamped on it. BRB
EDIT: you definitely did not get a delphi CPS. Please post a pic if you can. I am getting ready to show you my Ford, BWD and Delphi cps's. I have posted some info, I believe in the cps thread on my findings. BWD has the strongest magnet and most centered iirc. The black cps is the delphi, lrg grey is BWD. I currently have my international installed but will be going back to the BWD. I only have the IH in because I was doing an emergency fix/troubleshoot.
The heads on the delphi and BWD are the same size but both are bigger than the ford and IH cps's
