Thanks for all the info INFRNL! Maybe I'll just take the grey one back to napa and at least recover some of my money (had to pay shipping). I'll just get another grey CPS from ford for the MPG test. Would like to try the borg warner but I'm probably going to hit snow on my trip this weekend. Don't have time to deal with the wiper issue.

I just got a BWD CPS from O'Reillys last night. I popped it in and test drove, it caused the engine to miss so bad i was afraid to drive very far . . I'd been running a ford CPS, so i put it back in and the miss was gone. Part no. is CSS1603 on the BWD. *****They sell another CPS, listed as MasterPro® Ignition, (part no. 2-96105) for $42.99 vs. the $25.99 for the BWD. IT IS BLACK, and the head is larger like the BWD. . do you know who makes this for them??? i will order this and do some testing!

My wife's uncle owns an scrap metal, engin tear down yard in Chicago. They tear down blocks and heads and transmissions and send the rebuildable cores out to people like Jasper etc. A side from getting good deals through his connections on rebuilt stuff, he is also able to get me lots of used stuff. Every 7.3 they find with the older sensors in them I get. Right now I have installed them in my trucks and each truck has a couple spares in the glovebox plus I have a few in the toolbox.

Definately see better mileage with the older one.

Still on the original OEM (104k miles) one and have been carrying a spare for years now...knock on wood.

I have tried all of the International/Ford CPS units. In my truck, the original black OEM provides a smoother idle and the best MPG of all CPS's I have ever tried. I have also tried the BWD without any problems associated with it. The Ford light gray recall replacement was the worst in mine. I think that this is a per engine basis rather than an across the board as it seems people have different results with different CPS units. When you find the one that works best in your engine, stick with it.

Re: CPS MPG Test: Blue vs. Grey

Yeah, the. perdecls are terrible on cyl 8 & 3 on my truck..... Somewhere around 7% on 8 and 3% on 3

I currently have the grey one, only recently started thinking i should buy a different one. If the stealership has a blue one in stock, I might pick it up tomorrow.

I would love to get another original black cps, one day maybe.
The ford recall cps drops fuel mileage and gives me a miss

The newest IH sems to work just fine for me

Delphi gives me as good mileage as the BWD, but probably not as good as the original black

BWD feels peppier than delphi and no issues with wipers, etc for me.

I would say for me, IH, BWD, and delphi are all good, but I like the BWD the best.

So the original black ones are the ones with all the safety complaints and the pressure from us Ford owners resulted in the recall. Now we all wish we had them back because they performed the best. Am I reading this correctly? None of the other brands perform as good without the dependability issues?

Yeah, I know at least one of my trucks shows #8 cylinder poorly with the grey one in. With the black one my idle is much better as well.

Before I swapped my original black CPS back in, I had a CCT error on both #8 and #3, which went away as soon as I swapped the grey one out. I have a Perdels printout that shows the worst cylinder (#4) at 0.6 or less, #8 at zero, and #3 no higher than 0.1 with the original CPS. Can't get much smoother than that.

This thread has been very interesting, as for several years I have been getting periodic recall reminders to get my original gps swapped out by Ford. Just never did. When the "problems" first started several years ago, I went to IH and bought a spare (whichever one was the model of the day) and it has been in the glove box ever since. My original is still going strong and I will keep running it til I need my spare. I guess I have been lucky, but I had a little dream of improved fuel mileage from the tone of some posts. I can see it is not worth messing with until at least I eventually need my spare.

OBXNC, I guess what this means is that if you have an original black CPS that is one of the good ones, it is the best to use. The failure rate reached a point in which Ford had to perform a recall. It didn't mean all of them were bad or were/are a danger to use.

I was one of ther unfortunate ones. Both black ones I had were un dependable... but my truck liked them when they worked.

I have all three. The grey and black are behind the rear seat. My 03 likes the blue CPS.
