Cranks but won't start

Truck ran great with no problems until the other day. Got an oil change (I did go from 15w oil to 5w) and drove home between 5 and 10 miles now it won't start. Glow plug lights comes on batteries have been charged and the fuel pump sounds like its working. Did a little research and it sounded like I had a bad cps well 27 dollars later truck still won't start. Also all the fuses look good.
Any ideas I'm stumped???

What oil did you use? Is it a diesel rated oil? I've heard of people dropping to a 10W-30, but never heard a 5W oil

Re: Cranks but won't start

I've heard of people in really cold climates using 5W. Try unplugging your ICP then starting. Also drain the fuel bowl and see if it fills back up. Are you getting white smoke while cranking? You may need to get a hold of a scanner to see what's going on.

I live in Michigan been a pretty cold winter and hasn't been a really easy start so I tried thinner oil in my quest for easy starts, it is rotella synthetic 5w 40. No smoke when cranking I will drain the fuel today and see if it fills back up. I'm also running up to the store for a scanner hopefully there will be some codes. Will let you know

The scanners from the parts stores won't read these trucks. It takes a high end scanner.

Yes, the IDM going out will cause a no-start, but since they are kinda expensive it isn't generally a good idea to just throw one at it and cross your fingers.

Not only should the fuel bowl fill up, but with the drain valve open and the key turned on you should have a 40-50+ psi stream of fuel out the bottom of the engine(where the fuel drain line goes) every time you turn the key on for 20 seconds or so. The fuel pump will turn off after that if the engine doesn't start.
Also make sure the battery voltage doesn't drop below 10.5vdc while cranking.

Well here's some codes:
P0198
P1280
P1670
P0475
P0603
P0605

Let me know what you guys think I killed the batteries cranking it (they weren't great to start) so I'm thinking some of these codes might relate to that. Anyway trucks getting a charge any ideas on where to go from here?

P198-EOT sensor circuit high input
P1280- ICP circuit out of range low
P1670- EF signal feedback
P0475-EBPV malfunction
P0603-KAM error
P0605-ROM error

Normally, the 1280 code would be the issue, but you unplugged the ICP. The EF malfunction could be an issue, but is normally just a ghost issue. EBPV, no problem, as well as the KAM error. The 0605 code could be your killer. Try unhooking your batteries for a few minutes (or clear codes if your scanner will do it) and crank again. If the 0605 code comes back, it means an internal failure of the pcm. Are you running a chip? If yes, remove it first.

Make sure the key is removed before removing the chip...if you got one

Unplugged the batteries warming up for a few minutes before going back out, but I was wondering is this a common problem? Also can I do this myself or does a ford dealer have to flash the new one

Bad connections on chips are known to cause the pcm to go belly up. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens enough. Remove your chip and try cranking. Sometimes it will fix the problem.

Chip removed, batteries pulled and put back in. Still getting two codes: p0603 and exhaust manifold (can't remember code)

So any other ideas before the tow to the dealer?
Also if it is a ba PCM what's a fair price from a dealer to replace?

Well dealer wants $3900 for 8 new injectors. Having said that I'm getting a second opinion from a small shop. Owners son is a powerstroke guy and seems to think the IPR might be the cause but hasn't seen it yet. Anyway he's going to diagnose it tomorrow hopefully ill keep everyone posted.
