delay going into reverse

Hey all,
I traded in my 2000 for a 2003 7.3 auto

Some times when I put the shifter in revers the truck does not want to move. If I give it gas it will kick in and off I go. Also when it will not move I put the trany into drive then back to reverse all is well.
The trany does not seem to be slipping. just does not want to go into reverse this only happens maybe 1 out of every 20 times.

Anyone seen or heard of this?

thanks,

Bo

Re: delay going into reverse

Depending on the miles on the truck you may want to think about putting in fresh tranny fluid.

Before the first fluid change on the 99 at 60K miles the tranny took quite a while to engage after shifting.

If you have warranty you may want to have the tranny scanned for problems or checked out by a dealership.

Re: delay going into reverse

I thought '03s were 6.0's? Mine does the same thing. I'm getting a torque converter put in next week and will get the trans. serviced as well. I'll let you know if it clears it up.

Re: delay going into reverse

Recently read a post here (somewhere) about a recent TSB issued for this issue...just can't seem to put my hands on it now.

Seems to be a cold weather issue for some...synthetic tranny fluid should make a difference. Mobil 1, or Schaeffer's seem to be the popular choices here.

On edit:

FleetMan posted the TSB:

18376
1999-2005 F-SUPER DUTY/E-SERIES/EXCURSION WITH 4R100 - REVERSE ENGAGEMENT STALL IN COLD WEATHER
SOME 1999-2005 F-SUPER DUTY/E-SERIES AND 2000-2005 EXCURSION VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 4R100 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION MAY EXHIBIT A COLD WEATHER REVERSE ENGAGEMENT STALL. THIS CONDITION MAY OCCUR AT EXTREME COLD AMBIENT TEMPERATURES WHICH CAUSE INCREASED FLUID VISCOSITY, ALLOWING THE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH TO ENGAGE DUE TO INADEQUATE INTERNAL OIL PRESSURE AT ENGINE IDLE WHILE THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY. TO SERVICE, REPLACE THE EXISTING TRANSMISSION FLUID WITH MERCON SYNTHETIC MULTI-PURPOSE TRANSMISSION FLUID.
EFFECTIVE DATE: 01/19/2005

Although this relates to the "stall" issue, synthetic might well address your problem also...good luck

They were, starting in November '02. The first several months of '03 production were 7.3L's.
