I'm on my way home stopped at light when I went to take off the motor ran real rough for a second then died. When I started it back up it ran real rough again and died b4 I could get going, this happend two more times then on the third time it seemed fine so I headed for the house but it <font color="green">**</font> hick-upped about three time in the first half mile. after that it ran fine the rest of the way home (maybe 5 more miles).
<font color="green">**</font> Note: by hick-uppped I mean the motor shut off for an instant but then kept going.
At first I thought CPS but I was able to start it agian and I was under the impression that once it goes thats it.
<font color="red">ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESSTIONS??</font>
Also this is 7.3 with almost 20k miles. This is the first time I've had any problems with the motor.
sounds like a CMP (CaM Position sensor) to me, mine did that same thing for about a week before i replaced it. it would die dead as a door nail, them fire right up...or not.

Running rough sounds a bit like a fuel issue but you never know unless you check it out, any chance your water in fuel light came on ? have you changed your filter recently? have you drained your fuel housing drain to see what comes out??
Just dying and then starting back up now that sounds like a CPS.
Here is some CPS info:
LOTS of posts on CPS, lots of them.
Problems are intermittent and variable
Here are some:
Malfunctioning CPS will often quit or stumble on accelerating but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often quit and come to dead stop but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often set a code but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often set SES light but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often act up when cold (or cool) but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often set start right back up after quitting but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often last for weeks after first quitting but not always
Might as well get one NOW 'cause your truck will surely die.
Only takes 10 minutes to change. Better in you driveway than by the side of the freeway.
You can get one from International: # 1825899C93---- $98.00
You can get one from Ford: # F7T012K073A------------ $180.00
You can get one from NAPA # CSS-512------------------ $124.00
You can get one from one of our sponsors <font color="red"> POWERSTROKE SHOP </font>------------$79.00

It only ran rough a split second b 4 it died and those hick-ups I wrote about other than that it was running fine b4 and in the 5miles since. (I guess tommorrow will be an adventure) The water in fuel light did not come on. I filled up yesturday AM and put 180 miles on b4 this happend.
Is there a way to checks the codes without going to Ford? I can check my semis by just using the cruise control switches and counting the number of times the engine light comes on. But I have no idea how to get the codes on a light truck.
FOrum--
I know of no way to check codes outside of a scanner or the newer tuners
BUT,
A bad CPS will often NOT set any codes !! When mine quit it set NO CODES.
My advice, just change it. If it was not the CPS then you will have a somewhat used spare which is very handy to have. Let us know how you make out.

If you have a DIGITAL odomoter, you can access the codes by holding the button in before turning the key to the RUN position (not start). This should then get it into a simple diagnostic mode and I think you just keep pressing the button in the dash to cycle thru everything.
If you have an analog odometer, then you need a code reader such as a superchips 1705 microtuner, or maybe get your local autoparts store to try and read it.
HOWEVER, the superduties are not required to meet OBD-II standards, and as such MANY code readers have a hard time with out trucks.
If its not the CPS (which is most likely is by the way), I would take a cursory inspection of the ICP connector. Its a sensor in the drivers side head, just behind the alternator. They are prone to getting water in them and corroding the contacts and can cause intermittent rough running.
(click on 10k mod in my signature, it has a picture of the ICP sensor so you can locate it)
Also, click on CPS in my signature for pics on the CPS sensor.

[/ QUOTE ] This procedure will only give you the instrument cluster codes and nothing from the PCM. If you do a search under my name, FordMastertech, I posted lots of information on this subject.

Looks like general concensus is CPS It's on order as of last night. I havn't completely ruled out a fuel issue because I havn't checked anything since I got home last night and won't be able to until tonight. I'm still open to anyone's suggestions or tips on other things to check, so please keep those posts coming.
Funny, (and I should have known that I jinxed myself) but I was looking at TDS last week and noticed the great deal powerstokeshop.com has on the CPS started to order then thought, <font color="red">"this will probaly never happen to me, so why blow 80 bucks",</font>when the truck shut down on the road those words were ringing in my head, along with you some other words. Although, I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that made it to the house instead of getting there on a hook.
FWIW when my CPS went, I was cruising on the I at about 75mph and all of a sudden the truck died. I coasted to the shoulder and turned the truck off and then tried to restart it. It fired right up and I was on my way again. Went about a mile and it died again. Restarted again and just drove it @ about 65 mph the rest of the way home. I ws carrying a spare CPS and my tuner/code reader told me it was the CPS, not that I had any doubt what it was. It literally took less than 5 minutes to change out in the driveway with a 10mm ratchet/socket.

When you change the cps do you put any oil on the o-ring to help it seal or just slide it in? I am fixing to change mine before my trip and would like to know. Thank you.
