Re: Differential lube question what to use

75w-90 for the front and 75w-140 for the rear. You will need friction modifier for the rear. If you go with Amsoil it has the modifier in it. You can't go wrong with Mobil1, Redline, etc. I'm not sure if they have modifier in them or if you have to add some.

Re: Differential lube question what to use

Just make sure to use synthetic gear oil too. The correct weights are posted above.

Re: Differential lube question what to use

I would use a synthetic, try to find one without the friction modifier in it. Than add small amounts of friction modifier until the LS is working the way you like it.

Re: Differential lube question what to use

Your Owner’s Guide probably says 75w90 synthetic for the front axle. But Ford changed it in the Workshop manual, and it now calls for 90w synthetic.

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>
2002 F-Super Duty/Excursion Workshop Manual
SECTION 205-03: Front Drive Axle/Differential
SPECIFICATIONS

General Specifications
Item Specification
Lubricants and Sealants
SAE 90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant C2AZ-19580-F ESW-M2C105-A

</pre><hr />

The rear axle on an SRW is still 75w140 synthetic.

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>
2002 F-Super Duty/Excursion Workshop Manual
SECTION 205-02D: Rear Drive Axle/Differential — Ford 10.50-Inch Ring Gear
SPECIFICATIONS

General Specifications
Item Specification
SAE 75W-140 Synthetic Rear Axle Lubricant F1TZ-19580-B WSL-M2C192-A
Additive Friction Modifier C8AZ-19B546-A EST-M2C118-A
</pre><hr />

As far as which brand to get, the Ford 75w140 synthetic gear lube is really good stuff. But Ford is really proud of it, so they charge a high price. If you have a convenient source for Mobil 1 lubes, or Redline or AMSoil, maybe check on their price.

For the friction modifier, my dealer put MOPAR brand (from the Dodge Boys) in mine, and it works great. So if you have a Dodge dealer nearby, you might want to try it.

Re: Differential lube question what to use

I just did this and took the advice of Mach1.

I got 4 qts of Royal Purple 75W/140 from Napa. Supposedly has the modifier in it so nothing else is needed. Then I got 3 cans of brake cleaner. Remove the cover and spray the diff while turning the wheels. Wipe out. Clean VSS. Put some RTV on the cover (after cleaning it). Let it set. Put cover on and fill with Royal Purple. That is it - no modifier, etc.

I have no chatter, and I can leave 2 marks in the dirt - so it is working well...

4 Qts Royal Purple
3 cans brake cleaner (that doesn't leave residue)
Paper shop towels
RTV silicon

I spun the wheels prior to driving to make sure I got some lube into the bearings. Then we spun the wheels in different directions to get the lube into the clutch packs prior to driving.

Good luck!
