I am trying to lube the splines and I can't get the drive shaft out of the yolk. I removed th 4 8mm bolts and it looks like the u-joints are rusted in. Is this normal?? I have never dropped a drive shaft so I am wingin' it. Do you have to drop the real u-joint or can you drop it from the front u-joint. I don't have the star socket or the right one for the rear I don't think. That is why I am trying to drop the front. Spray with penetrating lube and then put a pry bar on it or what???/
WEll, I had to punt on this deal. I have been needing to do this for a long time (50K) but it just never got worse. I guess I learned to live with it unintentionally. But anyway, I can't get the dang thing loose or pulled out of the yolk. Can't get the bolts out of the back bracket either. Squirted with PB Blaster. Will let soak for a few days and maybe try again. I think I am screwed and will have to take it somewhere.
Any other ideas that may help??
If your vehicle is sitting on its wheels, make sure your emergency brake is on and the wheels are blocked so your vehicle doesn't roll away after you remove your driveshaft. You've probably already done this, but when you mentioned you've never dropped a driveshaft before, I thought I'd throw this out just incase. One of our friends neighbors removed their driveshaft and the vehicle started to roll with him underneath. Fortunately he had large tires which gave him enough clearance so he was able to roll away and miss the pumpkin as the vehicle rolled over him, but his vehicle rolled down his driveway; into and across an intermittently busy street; up a curb and into a block wall
I just lubed the rear spline Saturday. I had to use a 2 ft. breaker bar to get the bolts loose. Also, you only have to remove the rear clamp on the boot to get to the spline. I used a small pair of needle nose pliers to straighten the crimp and unlatch it, instead of cutting the clamp. When reinstalling the original clamp I used a small pair of end cutting wire nippers to crip it again.
This was the first time I lubed mine and there was still plenty of grease left. I'm at 60K so your fine at 50K.
Do you remember what size socket you used? I think a 13 is what fit tight on mine. Is there a special socket? Really don't want to screw something up.
I am actually at almost 90k! Should I just throw new greasable u-joints in there at the same time. Can any knuckle head do that job? I am feeling pretty stupid right now seems as though I can't get the dang drive shaft off!
