Engine Quit Running While Driving Down the Road - Diesel Forum

Yesterday and today the engine just quit running while driving down the road.

Yeasterday I pulled the batter cables and drained the fuel bowl (thinking maybe water in fuel) Truck started and a ran about 100miles.

Today on the way home just stopped running at 55mph.

Pulled over pulled the computer removed chip re-seated chip connect battery cable started right up.

Any ideas.

The truck runs normal and then it just dies.

I have been running this chip since May 05.

I have not done anything in months accept change the oil, put fuel in it a add a coolant filter about 1 month ago.

The truck has 76,000 miles on it.

Did you change the cps? look at the thread most important lesson... Truck has 76k on it only wouldn't refire. Every other cps that went bad on me would allow the truck to restart. I'd start with that.

It sounds like the CPS to me also.

I bought one yesterday but have not put it in.

The only thing the concerns me is that it re-started.

They will do that some times before it just goes totally out.

Her are some CPS issues:

Problems are intermittent and variable
Malfunctioning CPS will often quit or stumble on accelerating but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often quit and come to dead stop but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often set a code but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often set SES light but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often act up when cold (or cool) but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often start right back up after quitting but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often last for weeks after first quitting but not always

Thanks for all of the input.

I changed the CPS this morining.

It was quite simple.

Not inexpensive but simple.

The nice thing is since I have been reading this site for about 4 years. I kind of thought I knew what the problems was.

Time will tell.

What is the CPS? Anything like an ECU (Engine control unit)?

Cam Position Sensor..it tells the PCM the location of the camshaft's movement so the PCM can time the injections. It's basically a big magnet...or pain in the ass if it quits on you.
