There's an interlock switch that prevents cranking, if the tranny isn't in neutral or park. Sometimes that gets out of adjustment. Try messing with the shifter while turning the key to start position. If it's a manual tranny truck, the interlock is a clutch pedal position switch.

Could also be a problem with the ignition switch itself. If you have a multimeter, check for voltage on the small wire that slips onto the stud on the starter relay on the passenger side fender. If you don't have voltage there when you turn the key, head upstream to the ignition switch and interlock switch. Could also be a blown fuse that feeds that circuit - fuse #20 (15A) under the dash.

The solenoid could be bad if you get voltage on the control wire. It's relatively cheap and an easy swap.

interlock switch was the trick. approaching 200K mileage, I guess little things wear out. Many thanks for your help. This site has taught me much about my truck and saved me lots over sevral years!
