On a recent long trip there was a lot of heat in the cab of my 99.5 truck. A lot of heat was coming in from the boot around the 4x4 shifter. Took it to the stealership and they said I have an exhaust leak at the Y Pipe and that it would be $1000 to replace. I have a local shop here that I will take it to instead, but would like some recommendations on what to replace. I don't have a chip or gauges, although I hope to get them someday.
Thanks Jim

does your truck smoke alot?
I am sure it must be a downpipe....but a 1000 bucks?? You should just go to a exhaust shop and have a 4" exhaust installed from the turbo back...
The up tubes will be grooved where the gaskets ride - best to replace them as well. New hardware is a very good idea (a lot of $time$ can be wasted trying to save old nuts and bolts).
Also a good idea to have on hand is the siamese (the "Y" that clamps to the back of the turbo)... we can get to a point with broken fasteners where it is cheaper for my customer to pay for a (relatively) inexpensive casting than it is to remove broken bolts.
The paperwork from the dealer does say Y Pipe. If it is the up pipe, would a leak there cause a loss of power and heat to build up on the floor board, A lot of heat????
So, if it is the up pipe, sounds like the recommendation is to go for a full exhaust replacement is that correct also?
Appreciate the info, I am being transferred from San Diego to Norfolk, VA next month (NAVY) and need to get everything ready for the drive.

All you need is the up pipes, dougnuts, colector, and hardware. Do it your self if your anykind of a wrench. Parts total about $150, labor...$750, ford thinks there time is made of gold...
This is not an "exhaust". These are parts from the exhaust manifolds to the turbo... And yes they would cause loss of power and temps in the floor...
A leaking Downpipe would create heat and noise but not a real loss of power. Leaking Up-pipes would create heat, noise, and a loss of power as the exhaust is escaping before it gets used by the turbo.
FYI the torque for the Downpipe clamp is 50 inch lbs. The torque of the back inlet clamp where the exhaust enters the turbo from the "Y" pipes collector is 100 inch lbs. I included these torques as most people just over torque them.
The above downloads are thanks to the Ford Doctors Diesel Technician Society. I have the hard copies of all these books but the downloads are excellent! The downloads will give you detailed pictures of your engine including removing your Turbo.
Unless you have excess money laying around you can install a complete Turbo Back 4" Exhaust System later on. First get your truck running right. The only item that would have to be touched again to do the exhaust later on is the Downpipe Clamp.
I just had mine done two weeks ago. Stealership wanted to R&R trans for $545 plus parts of $180ish. I took it to a diesel perfomance shop. They did it for $420 (180 in parts) total including tax. They didn't pull the turbo or drop the trans. They put new up-pipes and gaskets on, re-used the collector, but spent a lot of time re-threading the bolt holes, probably would have been better for them to replace the collector.
I saw powerstrokeshop.com had a kit for this job.
Shop around you can find people to do it for a reasonable price.

Thanks for the downloads, I will pull those tonight while I am on my other computer. Just got back from the muffler shop I use and they showed me the leak. It is on the drivers side at the doughnut that looks like it is going up to the manifold. They do not do this type of thing but reffered me to a turbo shop. I found that place and they said that I should go to the dealership and when I told him they wanted $1000 he said that is because it is a PITA type of job. Said that with the miles on my truck 164K that more than likely bolts will be broken and in his words once you start a job like this you are married to it.
This is not my daily driver but I do not have the tools to do the job and do not want to get into something that I may regret later on and have to find someone to finish a job I started. I will take your advice and keep looking for a diesel shop that will take it on.
Jim

This job is pretty much a PITA, mainly because of where the donuts are located. Not really any way around that. Plan on basically all day if you haven't done it before. That's why they charge a grand to do it. I can do it now without pulling the turbo but if you haven't been in there before you'd be lost.

Ok, if I am going to try this myself can someone tell me why I have to replace the whole up pipe instead of just replacing the dougnut where it is leaking?
