Expected life of ball joints

How long should ball joints last, generally?

My original ones are shot at 82K and I'm sure they've been gone for probably the last 10K. Front tires wore really bad on outside.

Are Ford ball joints any good? Or are they junk? Thinking of having them do them for quote of $750.

edit: What causes ball joint failure? What can be done to extend joint life...........on not greasable joints

I’m going through replacing all four ball joints and the tie-rods right now. My research has led me to believe that the average life expectancy for ball joints is around 60K, for stock ones. I’m putting in ones made by Moog. They have the grease fittings and are said to last significantly longer with regular servicing. I bought a complete ball joint kit from Powerstroke.com.

I suspect the lack of lubrication and being cheaply manufactured are the cause of failure. I just changed mine at 62k; they have been bad for at least 20k. Find a good alignment shop and have joints installed that have lube fittings.

Ball Joint life

At around 127k, I took my F-350 dually into the shop I use to check the ball joints. The mechanic called me in and said the ball joints were fine and proceeded to grab them with a huge set of channellocks to demonstrate it.

However, he said I did need new shocks and I put on Monroe Gas magnums. Been fine since.

How about this for longevity, original ball joints made it to 222K. Replaced with Moog greaseables, and are still on the truck with 844K. I must have the best set of Moog ball joints they made. I wish, I could say the same for front wheel bearings.

SOLD!!! Guess I'll be goin' to Moog when the time arises..... Jus hope I get that kinda life outa my factory ball joints. Seems like the last production run of the 7.3's were a little less problematic though. I seem to have less problems than average (Not Complaining), and the truck just hauls ass, runs great, and very few issues. I bought in the last "Lot" production run of 7.3's for a 2003 F250. The following month, 6.0's showed up. Maybe some of the components were ironed out by then???? Dunno!!!!! Love my truck though.

I have been told, the new Ford replacement ball joints have grease fittings, and should be ok. I would look at the cost comparison with Moog. I presume, quality is about the same.

I have 80k on my original ball joints and brakes too. I will replace with moog though when its time but I think I'll go with brake pads from ford. Been happy with them.

Wouldn't be the first time an auto manufacturer used after market parts in their box. Hell, the 2000 Ford Mustang Cobra R has lots of after market items on it right out of the factory. Cadi CTS-V & Brembo Brakes, Harley Davidson & Brembo Brakes, makes sense..... Maybe I'll have to dig around at the Ford dealer and scope out the part numbers, I know a guy!!!

750 clams sounds like a fair price to pay if the shop knows what they’re doing and is using quality parts. I hit all the shops in town, (that I trust), and had quotes from 800-1,200. In the end I used the minimum 500 I would have paid in labor to buy all the proper tooling to do it myself.
I should explain the shorter life expectancy I quoted above. It is for trucks similar to mine that’s used in the same manner. I know several lifted f-350 crew cabs with 300lb brush guards, and other goodies, towing up and down dirt roads here in Colorado. Without greasable ball joints, that are serviced regularly, they have a shorter life expextancy.

Make sure they grease the upper joints after they(Moog) are put in. Mine were not and about 5kmiles later had steering/brake problems that getting them greased fixed. Need to do it again, but working outside in the winter in Colorado at 8000 ft can be tough.
