Fuel Filter question?

I just changed the fuel filter on my truck. It was the last one I had.
Looking to get some spares. It looks like the price has gone up drasticilly. It seems all the filters now come with the caps. I have never had to replace the cap (so far).
Is there someplace I can get the filters without the cap. Just the filter and the gaskets?

Yeah, the OEM filter was not a Ford or a Motorcraft brand - it was a Racor. PTP has the genuine Racor for $17.95. I ordered 3 from them last month when I used the last one of the 6-pak I bought several years ago.

Price for the same filter element from the Ford dealer is MSRP $45.32, and buying price from Wabash Ford (PowerStrokeShop.com) is $33.72 plus shipping. So PTP has a good price.

I have always purchased filters from NAPA that only come with the filter and O-rings and cap gasket. Never had to buy a cap! I cant remember the price, but I will be buying one tomorrow if you need to know.

I bought one from Napa it has the cover. They don't handle the others anymore. I wanted to have it for a spare.
I also ordered 3 from PTP

fwiw, I just went through two NAPA fuel filters a couple of weekends ago. The second one seems to be ok, but the first one cross threaded whenever I tried to tighten the cap down. This is the first time this has ever happened. The second filter went on the same way as the first, but I was able to keep it from cross threading. Not sure if there was a production issue with certain filters or what was going on. I think I may have to order a case of the oem filters without the cap. I also noticed that the NAPA filters had a regular o-ring for the cap, instead of the slightly inverted, flattened o-ring that the other filters had in the past.
btw, I had only driven less than 5k miles on the truck in the past year and a half. I try to change the fuel filter every 10k miles. But with it setting up, I was worried about algae growing in the tank and line.
Does anyone have an opinion on how often (time wise) to change the filter if you aren't putting the miles on it any more?

just my .02 cents worth
