I have just noticed that I have a fuel leak somewhere around the valley of my 7.3. I have looked everywhere and have not seen where the leak is originating from, but the fuel pools in the valley and eventually leaks down the back of the engine and down from the tranny inspection cover. Has anyone else exsperianced this with their engine? Any advice would help. As far as I can tell it is not coming from the fuel filter area. Thanks in advance!

check the fuel filter drain, the valve's are known to leak. If not that may be lines.

Thanks, Ranger
I took a look again at the fuel drain valve, its some what wet, but not a lot. Earlier in the day I soaked up all the fuel out of the valley so I could see what was going on. Took it out for a couple of trips to town and looked at it again, no fuel build up. The leaking has stopped, or it is a slow leak that takes awhile to build up in the valley. After checking out some other posts, I have narrowed it down to two things. The o-rings in the drain valve or the return line on the right side of the valley. I will keep an eye on it and see what happens. I have cleaned out the valley and dried everything of. Thanks for your response!

The o-rings in the drain valve are factory Buna-N (coated in yellow PTFE that is quickly removed with ULSD) and are quite susceptible to compression set. With age they will flatten out against the fuel bowl and when cold, they can seep quite a bit. Warmer weather or heat from the fuel bowl heater can get them to seal temporarily.
The other two common areas is the fuel sleeve that connects the passenger's side fuel line to the rear of the head. It gets cooked by the turbo down pipe. The other one is where the passenger's side fuel line passes through a "P" clamp by the turbo pedestal. Movement here will actually rub a hole in the fuel line but in both of these cases, the fuel leak will not stop for any reason.
I replaced the whole valve with a part from the dealer last night. Couldnt wait for a part off the net. Works fine, no more leak and installed a new filter at the same time. I was due for one anyhow. The new filters come with a cap attached to them and screw off with a socket. No more special wrench or oil filter wench. Works nice! Thanks for everyones help, I love this website. Thank God for the internet!

Don't throw the old fuel filter cap away! Some come with a built-in cap but others are still just a filter. Many guys on here have searched for a new cap when they bought a filter without the built in cap.

DannyDiesel I just replaced my fuel drain valve this evening. It was not that hard to do and it has been leaking for months. Less when it was warmer. Thanks for this post!

woodnthings, Thanks for the heads up on the cap! I did save it, I was wondering that when I took it off. What would happen if the next one I bought didn't have one with it? Great idea! Thanks!

The International part number for the valve is 1831198C91 Ford's number is F81Z-9A153-AA, the o-rings for the valve to filter housing are 1831204C91 or AS568-202. I don't think International breaks down the o-ring in the valve for the drain stem but that is P/N AS568-013.
how hard is it to rebuild it yourself? Mine has been leaking ever since the temps have dropped in October. Getting tired of the diesel smell in the cab when I run the defrost. My valley is soaked with Diesel
