7.3L Power Stroke Engine and Drivetrain Discussion of the 7.3L Power Stroke diesel engine and drivetrain in the 1999-Up Super Duty trucks and Excursions. No gas engine discussion allowed except on transmissions and drivetrain that pertain to all models. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 7.3L Power Stroke engine.

I dug up this thread because I had a PM a couple days ago asking me to comment. I didn't notice that this was an old thread.

The coast clutch will activate anytime the OD is turned off, or the shifter is in the 1 or 2 position. It can NEVER be on when the trans is in fourth gear.

From actual measurements having the torque converter locked adds about 10% to engine braking.

The shift schedules with the cruise active are a bit different, but the cruise does not force downshifts or modify engine braking.

I have towed about 60000 miles with my Montana(10.5K) and used the TC Lock and DIY exhaust brake and never a problem going down steep grades. So I recommend an exhaust brake with TC Lock. Many brakes to choose from.

Maybe my brakes are dragging really badly slowing me down on descents even though I am not touching the brakes.
