Going to get my first Ford Diesel on the 26th!

Hey Everyone,

I have finally found a 2002 Excursion with the 7.3L but it is all the way in Florida. Flying down on the 26th to Orlando and then starting the long pilgrimage home to Calgary.

Going to go to Tirerack in Georgia and I am thinking of stopping in at Power Hungry Performance while in Georgia and getting a tuning box (truck has never been modded). Anyone have any experience with these?

Then on through: Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Nevada, California, Oregon and finally Washington. Will be a long trip but should be a fund one - been to about half of those states before. Meeting up with several friends along the way. Not sure if any of you are along the way but would be good to meet up for a coffee/beer and get your thoughts and opinions on the truck!

This forum and its archives have been a huge help in figuring out what I wanted to get for a truck - many thanks. Hopefully I can see some of you along the way.

Cheers,

Rob

I only have the sales photos of the outside and they are a bit small but it gives you an idea

Shame VA is not on the route - would have welcomed the beer and talking shop.

I guess Edmonton's out of the way too

Only advise id give you is get the box/chip/reflash when you get back to cowtown. speaking from experience. The power gets adicting and you maybe left in on the side of the road with a busted tranny and big bill. These trucks eat trannys, no joke man.

Save the cash and get guages, oil change, fluids flushed and enjoy your trip.

Seller just had the oil done and he is getting his mechanic to check out everything and fix/flush whatever needs doing prior to my trip home. He wants to make sure the truck is in tip top condition for the big journey. Fantastic man to be so considerate and thoughtful.

Sadly most of those stops are out of the way. As for Edmonton, perhaps once I am back!

Good info on the chip - in truth I was wanting the chip more for an econo mode for the way home to get the best fuel economy. Once home I would play with the power settings. I have a buddy with a tranny shop so at least I could have salvation should I get over zealous with it...

Well, if you're going to be stopping to see Bill at PHP, then be sure you don't plug in any sort of chip until AFTER you have gauges. If you get the Gryphon programmer/tuner that includes gauges, fine, but buy and install the thermocouple while you're at Bill's so you'll have a working pyrometer for the trip over the hills.
Power Hungry Performance - Gryphon Dash Mount Programmer for 7.3L Power Stroke Diesels

Before you go out of your way to visit PHP, check their website to be sure they'll be in town when you pass thru. They're in the midst of some sort of family emergency right now, and have warned folks they may not be available at the drop of a hat.

Thanks SmokeyWren. I have been conversing throughout the day will Bill - awesome fellow! We discussed at length what tuner to get for my purposes. He suggested the Phoenix as the truck is just going to be a family hauler primarily. I wanted to see him for a tune so that I have an economy mode for the way home. I don't intend on playing until I am home where I have resources to help bail me out should there be a problem.

Good call on the gauges - I guess the cost of gauges basically negative the cost difference between the two units. Will discuss with Bill and see what he recommends.

Cheers,
