Grinding when towing and turning.

Just got back from a Christmas trip and pulled my 14' flatbed. I noticed that when pulling it and after, I have a grinding feel when I turn. I think its something to do with the friction modifier but taking input.

Thanks and happy new year to everyone

Could be the modifier, could also be a differential carrier bearing or rear wheel bearing. At any rate sounds like time for an inspection and fluid service change. Or, you could do it the cheap way and just add 2 oz of modifier at a time and see if that clears it up.

Thanks Oneof6. I think I'll try adding the friction modifier little at a time, after the ground dries up.

Think I found the problem. Went to go meet my wife at the end of the flooded roads, went to go lock my hubs in....THEY WERE ALREADY LOCKED!! And have been for about 2500 miles. I consider myself luck to still have a functioning transfer case. I drove at some points 80-95mph.

So you unlocked it and it went away? Guess im missing how the hubs being locked is going to hurt anything. Your transfer case was in 2wd, no?

Yes, didn't notice it after unlocking. The transfer case was not built for high highway speeds. Locking the hubs locks the wheel to the axles, which is tied into the front drive shaft. Only thing switch the truck from 2wd to 4wd is to connect to drive line from the transmission to the transfer case.

It can be done on day to day basis. Just more wear on everything. I know a guy that drove 100mph with his hubs locked in and exploded his transfer case.

Would you describe this noise/vibration? I'm having a similar issue on taking off from a stop and turning, and I'm also thinking it was in the final drive. But I'm also experiencing a rumbling vibration, similar to running over road-side warning rumbles, but only on throttle-off. AND I'm noticing a decrease in fuel economy.

Any easy way to test this short of putting it on a lift? Getting damn cold outside too.

Hold the brakes and put the truck from drive to reverse. If you feel a **clunk** its probably the ujoints. Try locking and removing your front hubs, if you have a 4x4. Check for play in the center axle bearing...I've heard it called swing bearing, hanger bearing, and carrier bearing. You can also pull the plug on the differential and see if it has any metal shavings on it. You can also jack the tires up and see if they wiggle.

My is kinda lick you described, running on the edge of the road....slowly as I was turning.

I know a guy that had his hubs locked for over a year. He did not know it. I noticed the u-joints spinning and told him. He said it had been a year since he used 4wd. Just more drag probably.

Pulled the locks off today and they seem fine: they lock when manually locked and spin free when not. Is it safe to run with the locks off for a short test run (5-10 miles?) to verify these are not the issue? - GA
