It can be done on day to day basis. Just more wear on everything. I know a guy that drove 100mph with his hubs locked in and exploded his transfer case.
He must have had the t-case in 4wd. When we drag race, we always launch in 4WD, and leave the t-case engaged all the way down the strip. Has to be disengaged before turning to keep from putting the driveline in a bind.
I leave the hubs locked in all winter long (and I mean LONG). Have done that with every 4x4 I've owned.
The front output shaft sprocket and bearings are submerged in ATF, and is better lubricated than the upper shaft that's turning the rear driveshaft. The clutch and sprocket on the upper shaft doesn't turn with the hubs unlocked, so the bearings the sprocket runs on are turning on the shaft, but if the hubs are locked, the sprocket and shaft run together, but aren't locked together so that the difference in speeds of the driveshafts when turning doesn't put any stress on the t-case.
There is a bit more wear in the front driveline components, but to say that the t-case isn't built for high speeds is just wrong.
Didn't resolve it. I'm back to thinking u-joints/carrier bearing...
Wanted to pass something by the group.
Yesterday I was reversing up a steep driveway, and I noticed that any time the steering was not dead-center straight I'd get a slight "rumbling" in the steering wheel. Does this ring a bell with anyone, and could this be related?
I did verify that the "rumbling" I get on the highway is VERY prevalent off-"throttle", completely gone with a slight throttle tip-in, and still there but light when on-throttle under load. And if going down a hill off-throttle and I put it into neutral, it does not make any difference in the rumbling vibration.

To me, all of that points to the rear differential ring and pinion. Pull the plug and see if you see metal shavings. You may have to pull the cover to verify. Have you checked the ujoints????

noise when trucks doing 20 mph or so under light acceleration or decelling , it stops when trany shifts into 3rd , or noise stops when speeds up past a certain point . i just started to notice it , as i've only had truck a few months . it only has 122,000k on odometer , but i noticed it had a sticker in door jam from jaspers truck repair with diff. circled . i take it that at one time it has had work done to it . im wondering if thats got something to do with it . i haven't heard anything good about that place yet , only bad .

...I'm having a similar issue on taking off from a stop and turning, and I'm also thinking it was in the final drive. But I'm also experiencing a rumbling vibration, similar to running over road-side warning rumbles, but only on throttle-off.

Winnar.
Once I dug it out of the snow and drove it for the first time in a couple months, it became terribly obvious the rear u-joint was toast. Funny how this stuff can sneak up on you when you're driving it all the time.
Still doesn't start worth a crap when cold, but I'm guessing it's time for injectors at 291k miles.
