Has any one pulled there own transmission?

Has any one pulled there own transmission and change out there torque converter, clutch packs, pump modifications? What I'm getting at is how hard is this work. I know you need a special tool for the center post or you can make one up.

Re: Has any one pulled there own transmission?

Pulling the tranny is not a big deal...ya need a jack and jack stands...well some of us,,,,right Brian? LOL Pulling the tranny is the easy part. As for going in and doing mods to the clutches,,,pump,,, ect... I will leave that to BTS thank you! You dont have to pull the tranny to do the mods most on here do... Valve body , Sonnax,, and such.

Re: Has any one pulled there own transmission?

Hey coldair,
How was the reinstall of the BTS tranny? Any problems with shifting or the other electronic controls or did everything work as expected out of the box?

I'm thinking of doing the same when mine finally craps out(seems to be getting close now) but have never attempted a tranny install before. Any advise is appreciated.

Re: Has any one pulled there own transmission?

I have installed two BTS's. One in my truck and one in a Friends. Both installs went great and both BTS's worked as advertised. Mine has been in my truck for about 40K miles and it shifts better now then it did when I installed it.

I just installed the other one last Saturday and we now have another happy BTS owner to add to the list.

Re: Has any one pulled there own transmission?

Its not that bad to take out the tranny, but the tear down can be a PITA if you don't have the right tools, the center support can be torqued down many ways, The tranny guy Richster69 has photos of the whole rebuild, and the direct drive can be a little tricky, just use a lot of tranny assembly lube and patience, good luck, oh yea order atranny manual too, its full of good info and pics,

Re: Has any one pulled there own transmission?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll be picking up a repair manual tomorrow; ATSG is supposed to make a good repair manual. Still in the look before you leap faze. Found a 5r110 torque converter for around $375 CDN /$275 US, still thinking about that one though. Renting a tranny jack is a must and sucking up to the boss without lousing my dignity, for use of the shop takes time. The motivator to do this job is not just to save a buck, but it helps. Sure is fun learning something new and right the first time.

Re: Has any one pulled there own transmission?

Well good luck,, I dont mean this in a bad way,,,but you wondered if "Anyone has pulled their own tranny on one of these" ( I guess wondering how hard it is?) and your wanting to rebuild it too! Very industrious of you! Hope things work out like you want them to.
Pulling any rear wheel drive auto is not too hard. I got to where I could pull my 700R4 out the last time in less than an hour and a half. (4 times pulling it,,, ) It was a half ton 4x4. And the time was from when I pulled into the garage,,,to when the tranny was on the floor next to the truck and I was wiping my hands off ,,done.
I was sooo pissed that it went out again,,, I had to make a game out of it,,,,,to let off some steam.
Pic of the truck I did that on is Here,,, below my current SD.... the best truck I have ever owned...!

Re: Has any one pulled there own transmission?

Jim T and Trapper thanks for the well wishes and the lead on Richster69’s pictorial.
I’ll be looking into this for a while before I leap.
Thanks again.
