What does your tranny gauge tell you? That's what I would go by. I hacked a chunk of the heatshield out to get my Aeroturbine as far forward as possible and I had the same concern. I'm sure there is some heat transfer that occurs (that shield is there for a reason afterall) but I haven't noticed any change with my tranny temps.

Re: Heat shield ..Is it ok to remove?? or does it really help your tranny stay cool?

Bagstroke - I need to correct something. I just went and checked under the truck and the part of the heatshield I removed was farther back, at the transfer case and on the frame side, not the tranny/transfer case side. So, my experience isn't valid, assuming you removed part of the heatshield up by the tranny/cooler lines.

Nonetheless, I would just go by your gauge.

Not that this matters at this point, but what did you have to get to that required you to hack on the heat shield? The top of the tranny can be reached from the driver's side but I've never actually tried to remove and replace anything up there with the tranny in the truck.

Re: Heat shield ..Is it ok to remove?? or does it really help your tranny stay cool?

Sometimes the heat shield protects things like the case or wiring or sensors that can get hot enough to soften. Aluminum doesn't like to see much over 300°F before it's properties start to change. It might not make any difference to fluid temps, but a small spot on the case might have a problem.

Re: Heat shield ..Is it ok to remove?? or does it really help your tranny stay cool?

Isn't the purpose of the heat shield to help prevent transfer of the tranny heat to the floor of the cab?

I don't believe it functions as a heat sink for the tranny and if it does I can't imagine that it's a very good one.

Good point, but there is also a heat shield between the transmission and the exhaust pipe, although I have a manual transmission, but I guess it should be the same for automatics. Aren't the manual tranmissions bigger that the automatics, thus the heat shield?

Re: Heat shield ..Is it ok to remove?? or does it really help your tranny stay cool?

The shield is between the tranny and the exhaust pipe..I have noticed a temp change in my tranny gauge..I was always below 150 and now I'm closer to if not at 180 or higher..So I'm thinking about going over to the dealership(parts)and getting a new one...Believe it or not I think it really makes a difference...Or I might just wrap some heat resistant foil wrapping around the exhaust the length of the tranny? The new shield is $75 so not that big of a deal.. was trying to get to the top of the transfercase where it connects to the tranny...It was a *****..But I'm no expert so I did what I could...O'well live and learn... Re: Heat shield ..Is it ok to remove?? or does it really help your tranny stay cool?

Well, I would think that as your moving down the road, there would be enough air movement to keep the heat away. And if your at a light, or idling for extended periods, then the egt's mostly stay around 300 degrees or so, I would think it wouldn't be an issue other than to keep the heat away from the floor board as the other poster suggested.

Car manufacturers are in business to make money, they don't put things on the cars that you can't readily see that add cost to vehicle unless engineering deems them 100% necessary.
