99 & up 7.3L Power Stroke Engine and DrivetrainDiscussion of the 99 & up 7.3L Power Stroke diesel engine and drivetrain in the 1999-Up Super Duty trucks and Excursions. No gas engine discussion allowed except on transmissions and drivetrain that pertain to all models. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 7.3L Power Stroke engine.
A friend brought his 99 PSD over and it has apparently been making a horrible racket since he bought it. The previous owner told him it is a normal diesel sound especially for a 99 which was "Ford's first year to make a diesel" Oh brother.
In any case, it is a hollow scraping noise that makes people hold their ears when walking by. I am pretty stumped although have not had a chance to fully investigate. The noise is so loud, it is hard to tell where it's coming from but seems to be at the back of the engine. Just as loud below the engine near the trans as on top. The strange thing is that the noise COMPLETELY goes away when the throttle is pressed and comes back when throttle is lifted. The turbo spools up and sounds normal when driving and the power is good.
Here is my question: What is changing between gas-on and gas-off that could give that racket. Is the wastegate opening and closing and if so, could it be venting to atmosphere as a major exhaust leak? Could the turbo impeller be moving back and forth and grinding at one end of the travel? Anything else? What ever it is, it has been doing this for over a year without any other problems.
It maybe the Torque convertor. The 99 had a batch of bad convertors that sounded like "marbles in a Can" . Mine did it from new and it wasn't until 100K that I found out what it was. torque convertor worked fine but the noise drove me crazy. Replaced the convertor with a Ford Product 110K miles ago and everything has been fine. Ford issued a TSB on it and would replace the unit free of charge if you found out about it within the original 3 years/36 mo. warranty. I tried fighting Ford when I showed that in the times the Vehicle had been back to the dealer in the prescribed time frame with the note on the ticket about the noise, and no dealer had come across the TSB. No luck Ford just said no. It was a $500 fix so I just ate it. You can't fight them for that little.
Anyway just a thought.

Could also be the a/c compressor clutch bearing. Mine makes some noise from time to time when I use the a/c.
Its not a "oh the air is on and its making a noise". The noise is all the time air on or off. But mine seems to get stirred up when I use it. Wont be long till I have to replace it.
Sometimes it will stop making the noise and when I turn the air on it comes back.

Did yours do it only when NOT giving any gas? This noise only happens when not giving it any throttle ( like idling or coasting) The vehicle doesn't even have to be moving. Not sure how the TC would explain it since it is spinning regardless of throttle position... but perhaps a good test would be to remove the inspection cover and remove the TC to Flexplate bolts and see if the noise remains.
It's not coming from any of the accessories either. Definitely sounds like the rear of the engine or front of trans.
I don't recall, but is the timing chain at the rear of these engines?
The noise would be there whenever the convertor was not locked-up. So essentially all the time except in the final gear or if you mashed the peddle.

Does it only do it when the engine is cold? If so, i am thinking it maybe the EBPV or exhaust back pressure valve. Just a thought, but if you can hear it through the exhaust, it may be a good place to look.

Can you post a vid of the noise ? I have heard flywheels make noise before , but not at an Idle ,,& that was more like a chirp....

Hi guys, Im new here but I just had a customers truck in here last month with the EXACT same problem. Turned out the center of the flex plate was broken out . It broke in the shape of a hex head and amazingly he had driven it here. The flats provided enough grab to drive the truck normally. Also only had the noise at idle, quieted down anything above. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with my 99.5 and put ~80K on my truck before I was sitting next to it idling and it was driving me crazy. Someone walking by told me about the 99 TC noise. Also, I only noticed it when the truck was idling. After taking it to the dealer, they replaced it free of charge and I was ready to go and man what a difference. Not sure if you are having the same problem, but I never noticed any performance issues. Just the noise..
