HELP! front axle noises

2 weeks ago I went to lock my hubs in a snowstorm, they turned and locked but when I put it in 4 wheel drive it didnt engage. First off do you think they need to be rebuilt or would it be something else? The transfer case definitely went into gear and is working fine. Secondly just the other day I was driving back to school and I started to hear a noise in the front axle. I am getting a humming noise that comes and goes and some vibrations that I can feel through the floor. Also, sometimes it is very loud and sounds like metal on metal, almost a whine like when your brake pads wear out and it is the metal pad on the rotor. It is in 2 wheel drive and the hubs are unlocked. Also I can move the U-Joints by hand so I am guessing that the bearing is bad there too?
Thanks for any help

It could just be the axle seal spinning. Mine started spinning with the shaft one time and it sounded horrible. The seal is behind everything just where the axle shaft goes into the housing. Spary some silicone or WD 40 on it and see what what happens. The seal is no big deal and you could go without.
