truck is making a clunking noise up by the front passenger tire when i am slowing down say around 10mph so i checked my front axle right out by the wheel it moves up and down like an inch or two any idea whats going on.i replaced the ball joints and the little bearing on the end of the axle shaft about 10,000 mile ago think its that or a bigger problem
If you jack the front of the truck up and grab ahold of the tire;
top and bottom movement indicates balljoints
front and back movement indicates tie rod ends.
if it is moveing in both directions, hubs may be suspect
It would be a good idea to get someone to watch while you are rocking the tire to physically see where the play is. Sometimes on the side to side it can be the opposite side tierod, or even the draglink.
If you are able to rock it "inches", YOU ARE ONE LUCKY PERSON YOU ARE STILL DRIVING A "4" WHEELED VEHICLE.

if the hub bearing is good, you are looking at the axle needle bearing, or a hub lockout that has gone to mush. Since you have to pull the lockouts to get to the needlebearings....
You are going to have to remove the hub assy to get to the bearings, which others are saying cost $10 a pop.

If it's moving that much, I'll bet the axle stub shaft is lunched too. Add a c-note for that, another $25 for a u-joint, another $20 or so for the big seal, etc. etc. etc.
I guess the best thing to do is to just go in there and see whats going on.i thought maybe it was that wheel bearing/hub assembly what do you think does that have any thing to do with the axle. i just wanted to have all the parts before i tear into it,thanx for the help
