help, this one has me stumped.

A little over a week ago this has started. All runs fine except out of nowhere engine dies and restarts. I have had it happen once when idling, but usually when driving. On average it does it almost once a day (some days it does not do it, and today it did it twice (first time it has done it twice in one day). It is off for all of .5-1 second. I hooked the code reader up and the only code is my backpressure valve is inop (which went out around the same time). I drained and changed the fuel filter yesterday, and it still does it. This one has me pulling my hair out.

Thanks for the help

Re: help, this one has me stumped.

Your sig doesn't say anything about it, but it sounds exactly like what my truck was doing when the chip came loose from the computer. I had to clean the chip and computer board really well and then use a piece of duct tape to hold the chip in place. Every once in a while it still looses connection and doesn't want to start, but it's very rare now. Just a though.

Re: help, this one has me stumped.

My truck acted like that when my CPS started going bad. I would be driving and within like you said .5-1 second the truck would turn off and then back on before I could react. I had a spare and swapped it out and the hesitation never came back. From what I've read though most of time the CPS will set a code.

Actually CPS problems will rarely set a code;

CPS Problems are intermittent and variable
Here are some:
Malfunctioning CPS will often quit or stumble on accelerating but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often quit and come to dead stop but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often set a code but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often set SES light but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often act up when cold (or cool) but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often start right back up after quitting but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often last for weeks after first quitting but not always
Malfunctioning CPS will often have occasional stuttering/hesitation/miss at highway speed but not always

Re: help, this one has me stumped.

I would also check your UVC harness, it sounds like the connection might be coming loose. Look for a loose or burnt connectors. Check both sides!

Re: help, this one has me stumped.

I'm having the exact same problems with my truck and I'm now in the process too of chasing down what's causing it. So far I've changed the CPS and taken truck to Ford and had codes pulled, nothing there. Last night i had hubby looking around at the ICP and IPR and basicly just looking at all the wires. He did find a loose nut (actually a very crappy sheet metal type nut) on the IPR and he tightened it up. I'm gonna drive it a while and see if that could have caused all the stumbling with the engine.

Re: help, this one has me stumped.

Thanks for the info, I will call ford tomorrow and get a CPS headed this way, and take a look at the wiring at the valve covers.
