Just had my diff service 3 days ago now truck started making howling noise. I think its the rear not sure though. I asked the mechanic if this rear needs an additive he said "no". It only makes the noise when coasting. 2000 f250
If you had no noise before the oil change I would be making shore first there was oil in the diff and if so asking what type/grade.
Sounds like a lube break down on the least polished surface on the gears.Hope it doesnt grind = rebuild.
regards Ron

The diff fluid is replaced by removing the cover, cleaning the cover-to-diff mating surfaces, cleaing out the old fluid, replacing the cover using silicone as a gasket and replacing with fluid through the fill port until it come out.
The fluid should be 75-140 on a Ford 10.5, and an LS needs a friction modifier.
If the additive is not used, you will get chatter on turns - that's it. It is not bad for the diff, it is just annoying. If this happens, the additive can be added by the ounce until the problem goes away after doing some figure eights.
If there is no fluid, either the tech forgot to refill, or the gasket leaked all the fluid out. In either case, they are responsible.
I'd be intersted to hear how it turns out.
Thanks and good luck.

they also replaced the pinion seal, but didnt replace the lock nut so it came loose, causing the noise. I would make sure to have whoever replaces thier seal put a new lock nut on as well. They also changed the oil again to the ford recommended oil and added the additive, because they could see I was'nt very happy. Lucky I was close to home when it came loose.
