High Pressure Oil Pump? What does it do?

Go easy on me. Dealer said its bad and needs to be replaced. I have the extended warranty, but didn't notice it as a covered item. Can someone tell me what it does and maybe I can look it up?

Thanks

Re: High Pressure Oil Pump? What does it do?

It supplies high pressure oil to run the injectors. It should be covered by the 5/100 engine warranty if that still applies in your case.

I suppose that could be a valid argument, the dealership or warranty company probably won't see it that way. What was wrong with the truck that made you take it to the dealer? HPOPs do go bad, but there are other things more likely to go bad and give similar symptoms.

Re: High Pressure Oil Pump? What does it do?

I had a leak. Small one. I have only had the truck for a month or so. Thought it was the main seal. Dealer called said I need the HPOP and cac tube replaced. It was leaking. Nothing more. Under my warranty I see nothing about a "pump" under engine. But, there is "pump" under enhanced fuel system (injection and pump; lift pump and a few other words used). Trying to get my facts stright in case they deny it.

Re: High Pressure Oil Pump? What does it do?

Many leaks can be fixed with a new o-ring. I don't think it is technically an "injection" pump, but it has been called that in the past(by Ford dealers even). I would fight it all the way if they try to deny it.

Re: High Pressure Oil Pump? What does it do?

The part and labor is costly huh? I will. I am just the type of person to fight it, but I like to have all information before hand to carry the conversation. =)

The High Pressure Oil Pump supplies (wait for it) ... High pressure oil to operate the fuel injectors. Leaking should not be a reason to replace it.
CAC tubes are nothing more than steel tubes. Unless they have met a catostrophic event, there should be no need to replace those either.

I believe both are cover under the 100,000 mile/5 yr. warranty. There is a $100.00 deductable.

The truck has 109k on it. Extended warranty is kicking in.

Re: High Pressure Oil Pump? What does it do?

I agree, I would take it to another dealer that knows about these trucks, just because the sign says Ford doesn't mean they have a good diesel tech. A leak should be able to get fixed by replacing O rings, unless the thing is cracked?

Re: High Pressure Oil Pump? What does it do?

I called the dealer and they will ask the tech. The extended warranty denied the claim. It is on the contract and excluded.

Have them research it again. Does it really say: "the High Pressure Oil pump is excluded"? If they are warranting the engine, and the HPOP is required to run the engine, then it should also be warranted. I once had a service writer claim that a failed water pump (within the drivetrain warranty period) wasn't covered. He changed his tune when I asked him if he would operate his engine with a failed water pump.

But like the other guys said, most likely it's a couple of o-ring seals that need to be replaced.

Call a DIFFERENT dealer.

Re: High Pressure Oil Pump? What does it do?

"Fuel injection oil pump" is the wording.

Re: High Pressure Oil Pump? What does it do?

There is one o ring on the HPOP that is not serviced by Ford or International. It is on the high pressure side and is supposed to be a special part. I tried several Ford dealers and the local International dealer and all came up empty. If that o ring goes out, you stand the chance of running out of oil very fast. There is another posting on this subject where someone pput a standard o ring in it's place and immediatly blew it out. So beware, all HPOP leaks are not readily repairable and a rebuilt HPOP may be the only solution. If I am incorrect on this, please let me know before I install this rebuilt HPOP.

Re: High Pressure Oil Pump? What does it do?

They are saying it is leaking internally (on the pump). There is no rebuilt kit available. Rebuilds are done through Ford on the core. Total price (P&L) $1110!
