Horrific Noise when Starting and a Hot Transmission
When I started my truck yesterday morning, the engine rolled over twice then the starter (I'm guessing) started making a thumping/grinding noise. The engine rolled over two more times then started. Once it was running, there were no abnormal sounds at all. It was 3 degrees outside and I did not have the truck plugged in.
Since then, it has made the same sound everytime I have started it. This morning it did the same thing even though I hadd the truck plugged in and the outside temps were in the high teens.
Also, I had the transmission flushed about 2 months ago with what I was told was synthetic fluid. Since then, my trans temps have been much higher than they used to be.
I see temps 120-140 degrees above outside ambient air whether I am driving in town, on the highway or plowing snow. Today I was driving home and noticed my trans temp was 170 degrees even with the air temp being 22.
Before the flush, my temps stayed 90-100 degrees above outside ambient air and never climbed over 190.
I will try to get a recording of the noise during starting to give you guys a better idea. It will take a few hours though.
Sounds like your starter gear may be worn down to the point where it starts skipping teeth on the flywheel. May be time for a new gear, or a new starter

Necessity is the mother of invention.

If it jams, force it. If it breaks it needed fixing anyway.

actually if its grinding prob time to replce BOTH starter and flexplate

Well fellas, I guess the starter noise was one of those "auto correcting" problems. Soon after I posted, I went to get a recording of the noise. I cranked the truck and the noise was gone. The truck has been shutoff and re-started four times since without an issue.
The hot tranny is still present though. I was going to the interstate and the temp was showing about 170. Thats 145 degrees above ambient. Soon after, I looked over and the temp was at 130. I know that a slug of cold oil will hit when the cooler valve opens but I had gone about 20 miles before it did anything.
