How can you tell if power steering pump is going bad?

I dont normally drive my PSD much in the winter but the few time over the last couple of weeks I have noticed a low pitch noise in the cab that seems to sound like its related to turning the wheel. The steering doesnt seem to be any different. Was just wanting to see what you all have experienced.

Re: How can you tell if power steering pump is going bad?

Mine's doing that too plus it's harder than usual to turn the steering wheel at low speeds. I suspect it's just a weak pump but I suppose it could be somehow related to the hydro-boost too.

Re: How can you tell if power steering pump is going bad?

Check Your Fluid Level. Mine was doing the same thing. When i pressed the Brake or turned the wheel i got a whining Noise... Your Pump is Either going out of is low on Fluid. Mine has been on there since it was new and been turning a set of 40" tires for almost a year now. With 213k Its still Workin like new!

Re: How can you tell if power steering pump is going bad?

mine was replaced last week,,,I had no whinning, but the steering at low speeds got worse and worse,,,this affects the brakes as well because of the hydro boost,,,,once the pump was changed everything became normal again,,,139.00 at powerstroke shop

Re: How can you tell if power steering pump is going bad?

Chris36, that's the first thing I thought "what the heck, do I have a leak?" but it was not low on fluid.

Lone20, I reckon that's what I need too. I was looking at the AGR superpump for $250. Twice the price for stock but may be better than new. Which turning my 35's was never that great at low speed.

Re: How can you tell if power steering pump is going bad?

Yes, tranny fluid. Flushing the fluid made a huge difference in my truck.

Re: How can you tell if power steering pump is going bad?

Mine has been making a lot of noise lately. I just flushed it and it made a huge difference. The noise is completely gone and the steering feel is actually a little better.

Look for the power steering pump under the alternator. It's pretty easy to see.

Flushing the system is actually very easy. I did that and the oil change in under an hour.
