How to quiet down my 2000 power stroke

I have a 2000 power stroke with only 38000 miles I bout it new and do not drive it much as I have a company car so it has been babied. My question is my truck is much louder than the newer diesels. I have heard you can quiet them down ( something about the fuel rail). Does anyone have any info on this?

Thanks

Jim

Re: How to quiet down my 2000 power stroke

Regulated Return Fuel system
High Pressure Crossover line for the oil in the heads
Acetone
Synthetic Oil
Engine Oil Defoamer
Acetone
Two Stroke Oil

It will purr like a sleeping baby kitten.

Re: How to quiet down my 2000 power stroke

Check your torque converter - eraly ones were known to rattle - sounds like engine cackle but can really quite it down.

There is a way to lock the TC when truck is in neutral - if you notice a difference in the sound of the truck - just replace that.

Very hard to distinguish the sound from engine noise - so don't dismiss it....

Fuel tank.
It really, really, really quietens the injectors down.
Just a few ounces of Acetone, and maybe half of one of they tiny little jugs of 2-stroke oil on a full tank.

Re: How to quiet down my 2000 power stroke

I found a way to quieten my truck down, selling it, along with replacing drive shaft, fuel pump, two cam sensors, coolant tank, both front bearing assb.,pinion leaking, doors loose, fuel drain leaking, turbo bolts coming out, elec. window motor, bad thermostat, lower goose neck leaking, two batteries, fuel lines sucking air, along with the stumble/miss at 1600 rpm, and now I think I have a bad injector all in 75000 miles. but the ball joints are tight and it steers easy if your appling the breaks. I'm just not going to do all this other bull $h** to quieten truck doun and make it run right I have spent enought that I could have another half paid for. Just had to vent alittle

Re: How to quiet down my 2000 power stroke

I have a 2000 XLT and I thought it was loud but it gets less noisy when I take it for a good drive 30 miles or so. I have 76,000 miles and the truck runs real good so I'm not going to worry about the noise some diesels make more noise than others and throw fuel into it along with the oil you are using and the air temp and I could go on.Drive it and enjoy it.

It will never be as quiet as the newer Cummins and DMaxs and there is nothing you can do to make it so. lots of suggestions but no magic bullet. Some say this helps and other say that. None of them work for everybody. Mine changes from day to day. Fuel quality seems to make the biggest difference. It really don't care for winter fuel.

Throw in a little fuel additive and park beside an older 12 valve Cummins

Re: How to quiet down my 2000 power stroke

Do you want to actually quiet the engine down OR do you want to quiet the apparent sound of the engine inside the cab? If it is the later, dynamat applied liberally to around the cab and engine compartment will have a dramatic effect on apparent noise. Somewhere, I read an article about fishing that medical rope (that soft rubber rope they tie around arms when they draw blood) through the door gaskets really has a dramatic effect of quieting the cab down. I like loud outside and quiet inside personally .

The Hutch mod and HPX mod will help with the noise...the regulated fuel system would help too.

Re: How to quiet down my 2000 power stroke

You will never quiet your engine as much as the newer ones. That's mostly due to the new pilot injection they incorporate into them.I found that mine runs quiter with a oil crossover line connecting the heads($50)and lower viscosity oil in colder weather. And lots of Dynamat helps too!

Re: How to quiet down my 2000 power stroke

Quiet?!? Can't hear you over the sound of my DIESEL!
Really, I don't mind the noise in or out. My wife gets company cars from GM, so I get a chance to drive some of their trucks. Actually my 7.3 is as quiet (or quieter) than some of GM's gassers at highway speed. I don't care about the noise around town since it lets people know I'm coming. Enjoy the status.
