I need help pretty badly with my truck not starting
I know I am going to be told you use the search button, and i have a lot for the last couple days. But I still have a lot of questions about whats happening..
I have a 1999 early model 7.3 diesel and it will just crank over without starting. It did this about a week ago and i could just tap the gas petal and it would show a little life and then start after about 20 seconds of cranking over.
Now it does it even longer. I have to really play with it for it to start. tapping the gas no longer helps. it cranks over for about 15 seconds, then i stop and try again and it starts after a long time if i am lucky. when it did it last week it was around 30 degrees out so i thought it might be fuel gelling. i got an additive and it went away for a week and now its back again. But when it did it today, it was 61 degrees out.
I was thinking that it could be the CPS sensor, but my tach is around 600 RPMS while i crank it over, and people have said that it doesnt move when that is the problem. I have read a bunch of different things people do for this but i do not know where i should start. any help would be appreciated.

Is there a check engine light?
Check the HPOP to see if there is oil in it.
Check the ICP for oil(driver side head front)
Try Disconnecting the ICP
Try disconnecting the EBPS

I have a 1999 early model 7.3 diesel .......tap the gas petal ...... tapping the gas no longer helps.
If you are tapping on the gas peddle get out of the truck, walk to the correct truck and step on the fuel peddle.
Sorry, I just had to say it.
How long has it been since the fuel filter(s) was changed? How many miles are on the truck?

If the truck does eventually start I would lean towards replacing the batteries. You can check it by jump starting the truck when it is doing this no-start condition. In ordoer for the PCM to allow the truck to start it needs to see 500 psi on the ICP sensor. When cranking the truck over if the cranking rpms do not quite get the HPOP to build the 500 psi the truck will not fire. When cranking over long periods the pressure starts to build up in the heads and eventually the required pressure is met and the truck starts. By jumping with an additional battery you should have enough voltage/amperage to crank just faster and it should light off. If you find your batteries are weak replace both! If this does not help try unplugging the ICP sensor (drivers side head forward side towards middle) when unplugged it sends a default signal to the computer of 500 psi. The other thiing that you could have is a worn out starter, when the brushes get weak the starter struggles to turn the high compression engine over. If you rule out the batteries take a look at the starter. Other than that if it does start and run you probably don't have any sensor issues. Does your glow plug circuit appear to be working? Also if you plug the truck in does this help it start? One other issue that might be happening is bad o-rings on one of your injectors. If you have high pressure oil bkeeding by an injector the HPOP will have a tougher time maintaining oil pressure at start-up.

Sounds like there is a fuel issue.
First thing to do check to see if you have fuel level filling up (in the fuel reservoir under the turbo diesel logo) when you turn the key to on position? When you put the cover back on bleed the line.
Without starting, try cycling the key from off to on, several times to allow the fuel pump to build up pressure.
Then try starting.
This is what I had to do to get mine to start the other day. Good luck.
I think that there might be a bad seal somewhere so when it sits too long air is leaking into the line.
wow thanks for all the responses.. I am leaving later tonight to get two new batteries to see if this helps.. I also called my local ford dealer to set up an appt to have the cps sensor replaced. i would normmally do something like that myself but since its free i figured id let them do it.
If neither of those two things help I am going to look into the ICP sensor.. I feel like it is a sensor because it has been an intermittent problem and not always there.. Ill let you know if neither of those help.. because this is my first diesel and i do not know too much about them.. other than the fact that the gas engines are no match for them
