Intermittent starting 2001 7.3

I have a part failing, need assistance identifying.

After glow plug cycle, truck will start 20% with no problem. 80% of the time, the engine turns over with a light buzzing sound from the dash area. On third or fourth attempt, buzz will dissapear and truck starts normally. Problem is overtaxing starter and cold months, exhausting batteries before ignition. Any insight would be helpful.

Successive starts are problem free once warm.

Sounds like it's time to get the batteries load tested. Make sure they are disconnected before do so.

Tom:
Are you suggesting battery health is cause of Buzz and no-ignition. There is no lag in the starter or engine rpm at starting, therefore good compression. Repetitive cranking eventually results in truck starting. Want it to crank 1st time. Will load test at your suggestion. Thanks Jim

Load testing is usually a good first step, even if it doesn't prove to be the issue.

When cranking w/ no crank/buzzing, do lights dim? Perhaps try with the dome light on. It could be a bad connection on the starter relay too. The buzzing is typically low voltage to the relays
