So briefly I have a early 99 7.3 and it is running like crap. I have just replaced the fuel pressure sensor on the front left head because it had oil leaking thru it ( also replaced the harness). the truck is still doing the same thing. when I start the truck with it plugged into the sensor it runs like normal for about 5 - 10 seconds and the goes back to running like crap. but when I start the truck while the plug is unplugged the truck starts and runs like crap immediately. I'm going to guess this might me be the IPR? (Back story) this truck has had a history of cold start issues, it wont start when it is cold out (I live in north florida so anything under 50 good luck getting it going with out plugging it in) and it has had a romp to it for years when I start it for the first time after it sits and cools down, once the truck gets going their is no problems what so ever i can shut it off and turn it back ion and never romps until i shut it off for extended periods. I have replaced the glow plugs in it and it didn't do anything for starting. i don't drive the truck too much it has become my pasture truck to check on fences and to pull trailers but i need it back soon cause my little car doesn't like the pastures. any suggestions would be helpful. thank you guys in advance. BTW i have video of the truck but don't know how to get it off my phone to this sight. help on that too?
Upload video to youtube, then use the share link and post that here.
Even though the parts store had it listed as a fuel pressure sensor, it's actually the ICP sensor.
here is the link to the video I took. the first startup is of the icp sensor unplugged the second start up is it plugged back in. the third startup is of the icp being unplugged again and the fourth and final start is of the icp sensor being plugged back in. all that was done with the original ford icp sensor. I did replace the icp afterwards due to oil leaking thru but their is no difference in the truck running.
Just a thought, did you replace the icp pigtail or at least cleaned it throughly to make sure that there is no more oil in the connector? What brand ICP did you buy?
IPR might be the issue but without scanner, i'm only guessing.
you most likely have a false ground to the IPR. The IPR gets power all the time with the key on and the PCM sends a pulsewith Ground to the other side. what happens when you start the truck the PCM fully grounds the IPR for Max ICP pressure and once it starts the PCM tries to drop the ICP pressure and It is then that it drops the IPR Duty cycle but because there is a false ground to the IPR it can not lower it and it starts to run like crap. But when you elevate the RPM it will smooth out some times If it is not a 100% ground.
The last one I had like this some one was putting power to the IPR to try to get it to start when The issue was a Bad IDM and he Back fed the ground that goes to the PCM and fried it.
Did you get it fixed? In the video it sounded like it was the IDM
