Hey guys I have a 99 450 powerstroke that started to make a noise in the motor like someone is banging it with a hammer. This knocking starts at a idle and continues with the rpm of the motor it stays at the same level but will not go away. the truck starts and runs fine still has plenty of power. if it was not for the noise you would think nothing was wrong with it. it has been doing this about 2 weeks now, i changed the fuel filter and air filter and oil with rotella 15w-40 any idea's? do you think i should be looking for a new motor? any help would be gratefull thanks
Do a search on cackle and you'll find a wav file that lets you hear what it sounds like..... To me it sounds like a hammer hitting steel. ie. TANG, TANG, TANG...
I put on a high pressure oil cross over and a ITP pre fuel pump mod and it mostly went away.....
From everything I've read, it's not something to be overly concernd about.....

I doubt it is cackle. Cackle's knock is at idle only. Knocking at higher rpms is most likely an injector.......or things you don't want to think about.

I'm with Cool_Canuck. Here's what Ford has to say:
In some cases, drivers may notice a "cackle" sound while the engine is at idle and normal operating temperature. The cackle sounds like a rod knock coming from the driver-side rear of the engine. Typically, the cackle noise goes away when the driver accelerates off of base idle, and returns again when the vehicle stops or rests at base idle. Cackle often can show up at about 1,200-rpm under a slight load, not just at idle. A true cackle sounds different than familiar "knock" diesel engines make during normal combustion, which is loudest when the engine is cold. Unlike the knock, the cackle will come and go intermittently (at idle, versus while driving) and will increase in intensity as the engine warms up to operating temperature.
A cackle concern can be annoying, but be assured that it does not damage the engine or decrease the engine performance or fuel economy
In mature vehicles, it is likely that the onset of cackle can be traced to a loss of fuel pressure caused by:
• A restricted fuel filter.
• A fuel pump failure.
• Air injected into the system on the suction side of the fuel system
My '02 cackles when it's warmed up and usually at or near idle. No noise when cold or at higher RPM's

Cackle is most noticeable at about 1500-1800 rpms and may occur at any RPM but be difficult to hear because of the high frequency or other engine noise. Idle knock is totally different.

Most likely your quick connect fittings are leaking but the fuel pickup could be contributing as well. Add a regulated return if you are so inclined. Your engine will thank you.

Whoa there horse2. Gave up smoking a while back (some days though). We are talking "Idle Knock" here. Part of the cackle problem and if you have ever heard it, you will not forget it. Sounds like the bottom end is gonna fall out right there in the driveway. Scared the cr-p out of me when mine did it. It is different than the ball pen hammer rattle in that 1,600 rpm range. Mine does one that nicely on winter fuel.

I too would start with pre-pump and tank mods, I did the ITP regulated return and Airdog and the truck runs much smoother and is quieter.I still have to install the Fluidampr and Mobil 1 and hopefully will notice even smoother operation.
The X-over oil line helped mine, then the tank mods and fuel regulator system from ITP made mine very quiet.

I just posted about the same type of noise. Looks like this might be about the same thing because mine is right around 1500-1800RPMs. I was thinking about the FASS and just a new fuel filter, think that might do it? Good info here, thanks.

I have a reg. return,Airdog.Oil x-over and bellowed up-pipes.My engine is very quiet and smooth at all RPM's! FASS /Airdog also helps WOT from dropping fuel pressure with lifter pump.
