Lex is back with a Transmission problem. HELP!!!!

OK friends, here goes. (I hope I can make this clear to ya'll)

The transmission in my 2001 F350 dually has a mind of her own. (Just like most females, including me) She has a leak. There is no doubt about that. It seems to be coming through the inspection plate, and at times, she shots a fine stream of fluid. The strange part is, she does not leak when idling or when I 1st start her up in the morning to go to work. She only does this when she is hot and driven for some time.

The Ford dealer here says it is some kind of seal and they want 900.00 (low end) to fix it.

Another dude, locally, says it is the enternal pump inside of transmission, it isnt holding pressure so this is why the leak. We need to replace whole transmission. Cost anywhere from 1800.00 to 2100.00 plus labor.

I do not trust these above dudes, but I do trust ya'll. You nailed it correctly on the CSP, or however u say that. Please help me now.

Add any fluid to it lately? Sounds like it might be over filled and spewing out of the dipstick. Just a reminder that the fluid is checked with the engine running.

Re: Lex is back with a Transmission problem. HELP!!!!

Lex, I also haul valuable livestock with a heavy head to head GN trailer and there is only one place for you to get your transmission. BTS. It is late on Friday afternoon but I would call Brian at Brian's Truck Shop (870-422-FORD). Talk to the man. Your tranny may have enough legs to make it to Lead Hill AR. Go and get a 6.0 cooler and new TC/tranny if Brian says that is what you need. There is no comparison to stock. I have not towed with mine with a fully loaded trailer yet but my tranny temps have not hit 170 yet this summer. Brian's reputation is everything you hear about and then some. Your horses are not worth taking a chance on. It will cost more than you have been quoted but you will then have a tranny that you will want to take with you to the next truck. Search on "BTS" and you will find many many satisfied customers. Do not fool around with anything less.

On edit: He may be able to ship one to an installer he trusts near you and then you would not have to travel so far. With the price of fuel that would save quite a few bucks.

He's right, it's the front seal.

He's looking to make a lot of $$$$.

It is possible that you need a rebuild, especially if you have a lot of miles. But if it works fine other that the leak, you can probably get away with just changing the seal. Now that does require removing the trans and a partial teardown to change it, so $900 doesn't sound out of line.

Re: Lex is back with a Transmission problem. HELP!!!!

Hey Lex,

I would recommend giving Brian a call at BTS and let him know what is going on with your trans. He will help find the problem and will make sure you do not get burned. Brian walked me through fixing my old trans without charging me a dime.

When I finally decided to upgrade I went with the full BTS set up. I now have over 100K of hard miles on my BTS and it still shifts like the day I installed it.

Good luck....

Re: Lex is back with a Transmission problem. HELP!!!!

How many miles on your tranny?
Pump does not usually make seal leak.
Can cause sloppy shifts, slipping, slow shifts.
Can also cause TC and clutches to shed material too.

Pump seals do go bad without over heating the tranny fluid.

If they pull tranny to fix seal might consider a new TC while it is off as more times than not the TC go out before the rest of the stock trans.

Re: Lex is back with a Transmission problem. HELP!!!!

Thanks for the new posts. I will give BTS a call on Monday and see what he says.

As for now, there is no metal in fluid, she shifts smoothly still, no slipping. She has 131k miles on her and runs great except for the leak.

Time for me to get to work. Tractor is calling my name. I'll check back this evening.

Again, many many thanks for ya'lls input.
Peace,
Lex (Sheryl)
