So heres what I have,,, Ive got an 02 F350 w/ a 7.3L that has a Dp tuner 6 pos and An Edge Juice 5 , Air Raid intake ,4" down into 5" straight pipe to 6" stacks, w/ Auto trans.
So heres the problem,,,, Oil is at the top of my Antifreeze,,not an excessive amount ,,but its there and shouldnt be,,and the motor on the drivers side rear, it seems the loudest,,is a knock,,not as loud at startup as it is when warmed up or driving,,,and its gets faster w/ rpms ,my first Guess was ,,Oil cooler had cracked allowing oil to get into my antifreeze,,as nothing else asside from the knock seems to be wrong w/ the truck,,it all started at the same time,, no SES lights, no missing , no over heating, no leaks , ,,does seem to have be lacking in horsepower just a tad ,,of course I drained and changed oil and antifreeze to see whats going on ,,, No antifreeze in the oil ,,just vice a versa,,,knock seemed to quiet down a bit after this until it was driven , now its loud as ever ,,wasnt able to flush out the radiator except w/ a small amount of water ,,as I was on the road ,, so after the antifreeze change I still have a small amount of oil floating on top ,,even though I wiped out top of reservoir best I could. Could a cracked Oil cooler allow this ? coul it be a Broken Injector cap ? wouldnt I have fuel in the antifreeze as well ? Any ideas ,,as Im sure Ford Dealer will tell me engine is Shot ,, because its out of warranty and has programs on it,,,folks that dont know diesels first response when hearing it is ,," Is that a rod knocking ? "

1986 F350 Originally from Salem, Oregon -plain jane turned into an XLT Lariat,6.9L T-19 4spd 3.55, 4x4 , Dana 60 Mono Beam front end has been undergoing complete frame on restoration since 05 , finished in '07, 4" skyjacker, 315 BFG on Weld Scorpios,true straight pipe duals no mufflers and no turbo installed but Banks is on its way, K&N filter and all new fuel system w/ injectors and glow plug system ,Chrome and stainless everything, Farmer Red and White Two-Tone Paint w/ Lariat Red interior, everything on truck has been replaced or redone , a zf 5spd are in the plans ,if diesel prices stays insane I wont be adding 4.10 gears.

i believe an oil cooler will cause this,i know knocking can be several things such as an injector.

i also noticed that in your sig you say you have a rear main leak,that is not a common issue with the 7.3.it is probably a leak on top,hpop line,turbo ped,these leak in the valley and drain in the rear,apperaring to be a rear main.

Not sue about the knock;
As far as oil in coolant:
wouldn't be cavitation would it? From neglect of DCA's over say 150k miles?
Or maybe you've kept up on that in which case it wouldn't be the issue.
I'm no expert. I've just heard that tell tale sign of cavitation is when small amounts of oil floating in coolant.

You are correct; 02 and up....may have actually been as early as 01
However, I know that not all shops know about that nor do they abide by it when flushing the coolant system.
If the customer isn't aware of it, and some shop just quotes them the cheapest option (50k miles vs 150k miles), some flush it and toss regular ole green in there.

I've got the same problem with mine...oil in the coolant....and when I get home next month, I'll be addressing the issue.....I had it to a diesel mechanic down in Florida, where he changed out my water pump [second one in 4 years] and he told me it was probably the oil cooler.....
It could be the oil seals on the adapter also....
Anyway, when I get back, there'll be quite a few things to address....
Ball joints, stablizer bushings, brake pads, etc, etc, etc....
i also noticed that in your sig you say you have a rear main leak,that is not a common issue with the 7.3.it is probably a leak on top,hpop line,turbo ped,these leak in the valley and drain in the rear,apperaring to be a rear main.
My bad ,, I need to update that sig thing ,, I dont have that 99 anymore the 02 doesnt have a rear main leak ,,just a loud A$$ knocking and oil in the antifreeze ,, LOL

I had the same issue on my Y2K. Took it in for an oil cooler leak (aka oil in the antifreeze bottle) and told the mechanic to see what that loud tapping sound was too. It ended up being a dropped a lifter on the exhaust valve side. Truck had 150K miles. The keeper pin backed out of the lifter roller bearing and the bearing was shredded up in the cam. It ground-up a lobe on the cam. Needless to say, we had to pull the motor and replace the cam. I decided to completely rebuild the motor with new pistons, rings, bearings, oil cooler, H2o pump, etc.....then I had to add an Addrenaline HPOP and Garrett 38R Ball-Bearing turbo!

Sounds like my truck exactly ,,,,thing is it was going into the shop tomorrow to get checked out ,, it ended up blowing up tonight on the way to work ,, i got her shut off right when it happened but if its needing head gasket or a new head and gasket , oil cooler and possibly anything else ,,Im prolly better off to just get another motor for it ,,,Dang it ,,,if it hadnt have been for our Blizzards of snow these past 2 weeks I wouldnt have needed to drive it to get anywhere,,,as generally I wouldve left it set until I tore it apart ,,,,What that rebuild cost you if you dont mind me asking?
