Mechanic says it is unusual (Anyone?) - Diesel Forum

I had a big leak of oil in the "Valley". I took it to a mechanic and found the HPOP o-rings were bad and they said the gasket for the HPOP was bad. They replaced it and now they see a small oil leak. They think it could be the timing chain cover gasket. Could this be? He says it could be but he is not sure. Can it leak oil from there to the "Valley"? Please help as they have replaced the HPOP o-rings and the other gasket and it did minimize the leak considerably but it is still leaking a bit. It has been at the shop since saturday and the have taken the HPOP off twice and replaced that gasket and they "beleive" it could be that gasket for the timing chain cover. Could it be? I don't know what else to do

Isnt there a dye you could add to the oil and find the leak by using a blacklight? [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif[/img] I think the dealership does this to find leaks, no?

It's not a timing chain cover, because the cam and HPOP are gear driven, BUT enough details. There are oil passages thru there that carry pressurized oil, but I'd think a leak there would be rare. Did they take the HPOP reservoir off as well? There's a gasket there that might leak.

Like the other poster said, put some fluorescent dye in the engine oil, clean the area well, and see where the dye shows up after a short run.

If it IS the front cover gasket, the engine has to come out to fix it. BIG JOB for an oil leak. You need to ask yourself how bad it is, and whether you REALLY want to pull the engine.

It is very rare, but the cover will leak. I had one quite a few years ago that had poor machining on sealing surface and was leaking. I fought the same situation, resealed hpop, reservoir, and finally removed cover to find leak. As stated, add dye and be very thorough on diag to pinpoint.

There is a small plug on the left very bottom of the hpop, I have had a rash of these leak here latly. The plug o-ring is not servicable with the hpop o-ring kit. Ford says not to fix but to replace the pump or damage can occur. I replace the pump if its under warr. if customer pay I remove the pump, stand the pump on its end, remove the plug, locktite the plug and install a new o-ring, leak fixed and it saves the customer nearly 500 bucks. There is a checkball the plug retains and one must be carefull not to get it out of place, I'll bet your leak is from this, the plug has a 13 mm head on it and is visible when mounted on the engine, look just below the pump outlet fittings, its there and I'll bet its wet. Tracer dye will find it as well.
