My 01 is stalling..... Please help.

My supervisor called me this morning and said my old 01 4x4 extended cab stalled 3 times on him this morning. Once in traffic coming to a stop kinda sorta quick, again at the gas pump after putting it in reverse, and again putting it in drive. Anyone got any ideas? The truck now has 173,000 trouble free miles. Been an INCREDIBLE truck. The IC boots going into the motor are freakin nasty gooked up. It's time I take into Ford for a little TLC but was just curious is anyone could take a gander as to what was wrong. Cam sensor maybe? I believe the cam sensor was replaced at like 98K or so. The only prob. I've ever had with this truck was the HPOP went out at 98K and thats when they said to replace the cam sensor. Oh well... thanks for any help in advance people.

Re: My 01 is stalling..... Please help.

Did the truck stalled and shut off (died) or kept running?

I had a truck that did something similar in the past and we had to change the ICP Sesnor... it may be something different in your case... any check engine lights on?

Take Care

Re: My 01 is stalling..... Please help.

Thanks for the reply.... Yes it shut off. And the CEL is not on. Crazy huh? Engines stalling and shutting off and no check engine light. I have the SuperChips tuner in it and can't find it anywhere to scan codes. I've had that program in there for about 110K miles now. Just wish I could find the handheld dangit. Oh well, thanks again and thanks to any future replys.

Re: My 01 is stalling..... Please help.

Figured I'd throw the simple one out first...
#1.Did you sell this truck to your supervisor?
Did he recently change oil?
Did he use 15W-40 DIESEL oil?

#2. 80K to 90K life of cam sensor?

#3. A bad ICP will stall the engine and not set a light.

No.... it's still my truck. He just drives it now as a work truck. Oil changed about 1500 miles ago. We use the rotella diesel oil. And could be ICP. How much does that usually run everyone? I'd like to know before I take it in and they give me a price. Thanks everyone.

Re: My 01 is stalling..... Please help.

If you have more than one truck or your friend has a similar truck try to swap the ICP sensor and see if that helps... also might want to swap the CPS at the same time.

The ICP sensor is on the top front part of the motor closer to the driver side valve cover... its a B* to take out... had to use a Crow's Foot Type Wrench to get mine off....

Good Luck.... I always swap things out before buying from the dealer. I have a total of 8 trucks.. all diesels.

To test the ICP sensor...just diconnect it. The PCM will set a CEL & a P1280 code and WILL run with the ICP sensor disconnected. If you reconnect, and it doesn't start again, then you know the ICP is bad.

I still say it's your CPS, and swapping them with a known good one from another truck is a bad idea unless you have replacement O-rings because the O-ring typically deforms and won't seal once removed.

Re: My 01 is stalling..... Please help.

Wow... wasn't expecting that many relpies. Here's an answer to everyone....

Yes he put diesel in it.
I drive a 6.0 now and don't know anyone willing to swap parts for a while.
Yes it kinda hesitates before it dies.
And that's all. I'm no expert or mechanic but a 7.3 with 173K and change that pulls a lawn trailer every day since 62K, I am leaning towards the ICP. I don't know squat about a 7.3. I only drove the Lariet personally for about 4 months before buying my Harley Edition and handing it over to my main supervisors as a work truck. It was my 1st. diesel and got into diesels when I got my 6.0. I apprecite EVERYONE's input and help and we'll wait to see what Ford says. I've got a great support team at my local dealership here in Jax. and I know they'll take care of me. Thanks agian everyone.
