No oil in HPOP resorvoir!

Hi to all, this is my first time to post here so be gentle with me.

Here goes: My 2000 F-450 7.3L DI Powerstroke(214k mi.) cranks and runs for about five seconds in the morning and then dies and won't crank back up no matter how long you spin her over. But, it will crank when pulled by another vehicle. Idles rough for awhile then smooths out a little. After that, it cranks and runs fine all day, no problems other than gradually worsening fuel mileage. When I try to crank it up the following morning same problem all over again. Today I noticed that there was no oil in the HPOP resorvoir. I filled it to within a 1/2 inch of the top and tried to crank it. It did not crank, so I checked the oil level again and it was empty again and my engine oil dipstick level was showing overfill in the amount of the almost full quart I put in the HPOP. Pull started, ran fine.

It has new batteries, starter, HPOP replaced 20k mi. along with glow plugs, relay, and wiring harness. Has fresh Chevron Delo 400 15w40 oil and filter, fuel filter, air filter, ICP sensor, CPS sensor. I also dropped the fuel tank and cleaned out the two fine screen tubes. No fuses blown. I just bought a scanner and also an IPR on ebay, but haven't received them yet, so no codes. I read a post talking about a " anti-drainback valve " for the HPOP. Can someone tell me what the part number is?

Any ideas on where to proceed from here? My other thought is the engine oil pump not putting out enough volume to keep the HPOP full? Fuel filter bowl is always full when I've checked it, by the way. Thanks in advance for any help you may give. This is the only delivery vehicle for my small business, so I can't afford to leave it in the shop for a week or two.

Jim

Re: No oil in HPOP resorvoir!

There is a check ball in the hpop with an o ring that stops the oil from running back down into the pan when the motor is shut off. I had 2 friends that had this happen to their truck. Yours seems to drain back faster than theirs. I think they went to international and bought the o ring and fixed it. I'm sure other on here have done it and will chime in. It's a .05 piece, that's the good news. To add on, cranking the truck over with the starter is not enough to pump oil up to the hpop. That is why pulling it and spinning the motor faster enables enough oil to get pumped upto the hpop.

Re: No oil in HPOP resorvoir!

B727capt,

Thanks for that info. Is it hard to get to, and can the mechanically inclined average guy (me) change this out without any special tools? I didn't change out the hpop when it went out, so I'm not familiar with it. Is the ball/o-ring in the bottom of the reservoir, or inside the pump itself?

Thanks,
Jim

Re: No oil in HPOP resorvoir!

Ball and check valve is in the valley behind the high pressure oil pump, looks like a 3/8 drive or 1/2 drive socket female.

If theis don't work you will need to pull the low pressure oil pump and check the engine panel. My low pressure oil pump wore into the front engine panel, started at 138,000 miles fially changed at 271,000 had engine pulled and replaced front engine panel and low pressure oil pump. at 340,000 problem started again, replace engine.

My truck was a 1999.5 replaced with new 2002 motor and tranny, did tranny because of a great deal.

The plug where the check valve lives is acutally BESIDE the HPOP on the driver's side. Look directly below where the fuel return line connects to the fuel filter cannister. You'll see the round plug with square recess in it.

Here's the Ford part #'s with recent prices from Fordparts.com

HPOP Quick Fill Check Valve
O-ring F4TZ-6674-A $1.13
Ball F4TZ-6674-B $3.05
Seat F4TZ-6674-C $2.65

Re: No oil in HPOP resorvoir!

capt.,
I've been driving my GMC lately, so I haven't had the time to turn a wrench on the PSD yet, maybe this weekend. This website is awesome! Thanks to all!

klhansen, thanks for the part #s

Re: No oil in HPOP resorvoir!

sounds like low presure oil pump. If it was the check valve then it would start after you got some oil in it, the starter is not spinning it over fast enough to start the oil pump suction, pulling it spinnes it faster,

Re: No oil in HPOP resorvoir!

I should have added that it did attempt to spit and sputter like it was going to crank when I filled the reservoir, but I think the oil didn't stay long enough in the hpop to have effect. I drove this truck today and it cranked properly in the morning and then went back to its old ways later in the day. After sitting still for only two hrs. it cranked and died five seconds later. The IPR arrived today, at an almost give away price on ebay, so maybe it will help along with the check valve replacement/cleaning. Will advise.
