Oil gone bye bye

Drove the truck tonight about 5 miles round trip and after I drove into the garage, I walked around behind my truck to go into the house and see this trail of oil from the street up the driveway behind my truck. Uh Oh. I'm thinking HPOP? However, wouldn't this be more than just O-Rings? Or when they go, does it discharge oil that fast? Dipstick only shows about 1/2 inch & it was full this morning when I checked, so it lost most of the oil just now. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Oil gone bye bye

sounds like a HPOP line popped off or sprung a leak. I'd check that first..

Re: Oil gone bye bye

Id have to agree that it is the HPOP lines or a leaking oring at the pump. I had a friend who had a major leak like that and it was his HPOP orings i believe

Re: Oil gone bye bye

Just had what sounds like the same rate of leak on mine. Ended up being the hpop resevior gasket. Kind of a pita to fix. I think mine was one of the rare ones and agree that your first look should be at the hpop orings. Good luck, it took me about 5 tries to determine where it was leaking as mine would fill the valley so fast, I couldnt see any dripping. If you cant see the leak right away you will probably have to clean the valley with degreaser and inspect with a mirror and flashlight. Be patient.

Re: Oil gone bye bye

Check the valley of the motor, (I am sure it will be full) You may be leaking bad enough to see it without cleaning it. But if you can't see it while running. Then clean it thoroughly with rags, and use brake parts cleaner. Once it is completely clean, have someone start the truck, looking for the leak. (You may need a mirror and flashlight)
there are a few places it could be leaking from. But yours sounds pretty major... mine leaked much less from one of the lines right here, these are next to the fuel bowl, drivers side.

Re: Oil gone bye bye

Oh yeah, the valley's full of oil and it's all over the top area of the engine and other apparatus aft of the fuel bowl, so it's gotta be more than just a drip if you know what I mean. When it gets light this morning, I'll have the wife start it while I'm up over the engine and I'm sure I'll see the culprit. Assuming there's enough oil left in the engine to start. Thanks for the advice.

If it is still on the stick, your probably fine for a quick start. (I think the sticks has marks only indicate 2qts.

If it is NOT on the stick I would top it off, why ask for more trouble, (hard start, wearing the oil pump, ect...)

Re: Oil gone bye bye

Good point. 3-4 gallons of Delo 400 is pretty cheap relatively speaking. Incidentally, how much oil do you end up losing doing the O-Ring R&R? just what's in the reservoir?

Re: Oil gone bye bye

Ok, Had my wife start it and it's definately leaking out of the end plug on the aft end of the HPOP. I mean it's just streaming out of it. Now maybe I'm being optimistic here, but that appears to be a very easy fix (Outside of the major cleanup job I have ahead of me). ratchet it off (it appears to be very easy to get to). New O-Ring and torque it back on. Is it really that simple?

Re: Oil gone bye bye

Ok, now that it's all fixed and cleaned, I have another question for the experts out there. What's the best way to clean my garage floor & driveway? I still have the wicked oil trail all the way up the driveway and into the garage.

Jim
