Oil Leak!!!

I have a '00 model F250 and we just changed the rear main seal because oil was leaking all over the back of the engine and on the transmission and everything else and we figured that was what it was. I am pretty sure that we did it right and got the seal in there good but when we test drove it, it began to leak again pretty bad. Enough to cause a softball size puddle of oil when parked. Is there anything else on the back of the engine that could leak that much oil??? The lines that usually leak on the turbo for the 7.3L were leaking but not bad enough to do this at all. Please help.

thanks for the help, found the leak; it was from one of the o-rings going to the high pressure oil pump. Once we fix that we will check for other leaks. That is a great tutorial and I needed that.

To change the hpop o-rings, do you just unhook the lines at the pump, change the o-ring, then tighten it back down or are there certain things that you have to do because of the pressure the lines handle and air that could get in the lines and all of that? And what is the best place to get the o-rings my guess is the dealership?

Glad I saw this thread, I have a 01 F250 with an oil leak just like David described that just started this morning. Going to get on it ASAP.

It was the high pressure oil line leaking and it wasn't to bad to change the o-rings. Just had to take the fuel filter housing off to get to the plug and the two lines easiest. Also changed the o-rings for the four fuel lines as well because they looked pretty bad. There is no more oil coming out so we must have gotten the leak!

Too bad you changed the RMS! They usually don't go bad on these engines. Oh well chock it up to learning I guess. Glad to see you got it fixed though.

And for the note, it was no fun changing the rear seal especially with a standard tranny. But at lest we got a good look at the clutch and back of the engine. You live and you learn. Couldn't believe that I made that amateur mistake.

Mine had the same leak that David had. Friend of mine fixed it and saved me a lot of money. Good to not be leaking oil. This is a great Forum.

I have seen the o-ring kit and part numbers here somewhere. I can't find them now. Anyone know them off hand. Or at least know what size they are? I have the same oil line leak, at least there is oil around the fittings and oil in the valley. It looks like a rms also. Do those lines just unhook, like a quick connect air fitting or something? I saw someone made a tool for it.

You can get a kit from Dieselorings.com

The HPOP fittings are AS568-906 (.468" id x .078" wdx .624"D), the head fittings are -905 ( .414" ID x .072 WD .562" D) just make sure you use a o-ring with a 90 durometer rating.

I found a kit with both fitting o-rings plus a few others for $17 shipped. I ordered it.
One more ?

Can I take the plug out and replace the o-ring, or is that where the little ball is that I will never get back in? I have read a few different accounts of this, I don't want to get into having to pull the pump and try to find a new check ball once its apart.

The ball I think you are talking about is part of the "Non-Serviceable" plug. If you have that leaking you have to pull the pump. If it is the unions on the head or the pump, you should not need to pull the pump.

Here is a guide to help understand the HPOP if you have not seen it. Pretty good info and a few cutaway photos.

If you have a leak from the "Non-serviceable" it can be fixed, but only after removing the HPOP? That doesn't mean you have to replace the pump, right? Can a novice remove the pump and remove the plug, or does it take special tools to service the "non-serviceable" plug?

You need to remove the HPOP to get access to the Non-Serviceable Plug. Once the pump is out you can replace it, with common tools.

Dieselsite offers good instructions on pulling the pump

He also offers Instructions for replaceing the plug. Along with parts (New Plug) to do the job if needed. and all the needed gaskets and seals to do the job.
